Still struggling inside the circle. Didn't run with anybody except for a Japanese guy at the very finish.

Pretty good start, then hit all of the 6th controls (6B was mine). When I saw 6A I thought it was a green X and not a knoll, so I figured I was at the green X SE of my 6. Thought that I was at the lower clearing near 10 so I turned NW, then found the broad spur. I lost the indistinct trail at the end going into 14, made the better miss. Ran right past my 15 somehow (how many times has this happened this week?) and had to go back down the river to relocate to exactly where I was before. Saw the end of the ride SW of 17 and just couldn't get a good bearing but I thought I overran it when I hit the trail a second time. Then a good race after the spectator pass, passing the Japanese guy who was a bit ahead of me.

Pretty fun. Wish I was running near people but whatever. Strange how much I'm struggling inside the circle, but at least it's obvious what I need to fix first to get better. The forests were so nice to run in.

Destroyed my third pair of icebugs in the exact same spot: the inside of the foot, halfway up. Holes on both sides. Super annoying, considering they don’t even have 80 miles on them.

Ughhhhhh. I struggle inside the circle. So. Freaking. Much.

Slow start and I was shaky to 2. So much climb already. Somehow ran right past 5 by going on the wrong spur. Then 10. Oh me oh my. I was looking for the clearing and the contours and when I came out I thought I saw the climb and depression at the top, so I turned NNE and blew up. Then 11. Oh me oh my. I just didn't run far enough and figured I entered too early after seeing the rocks so I thought I was in the E part of the circle. Ughhh. So I took 13 super conservatively, and 14 (on the small footpath). Then another mistake inside the circle -- how did I not see it??? Then 15, I was right there but thought the control was in the green so I never exited (it was actually in the white).

Then a clean rest of the race. Wat even was 17 though, I felt like I was going to die, legitimately holding on to stumps and roots with all I had to exit. Guided a very large group of people into 19 (cause I'm awesome) then a few passed on the way to 20, and I got to descend into the finish with like 7 people around me. That was pretty cool.

Sprint relay leg 2. Map + route.

Annoyingly when I unrolled the map to start it was on the wrong side so I didn't locate the start triangle until I passed it. I didn't really see anybody while I was out there. Turned too late for 1, hesitated on the way to 3, slipped and fell after crossing the fence on the way to 9, got trapped on the way to 15 (wrong side, costliest mistake). Overall not as clean as I wanted it to be but not a catastrophe.

Bad. I was never really in sync with the map, the forest, or anything really. Started barely being able to pick up my legs by the end and felt very sorry for myself after like 16. Route/map here. Yeah, I had a GPS tracker. I'm that cool.





Okay maybe not that cool. I never blew up in the sense that I lost contact with the map so that's cool, but I still blew up. Just like, almost entirely within the circle. Was seriously fatigued at the end. Some sub-par decisions cost me more energy than I had and I paid for it throughout. Happy to put that one comfortably in the past and move on.

I did a 14km in Switzerland, this sport is awesome. I didn't die and I didn't do anything embarrassingly bad. Plus I met a lot of people afterwards and definitely have many strong takeaways from today's orienteering.

Sprint at WUOC. Finished 66th. For my first sprint in Europe (first race for that matter too) I'm decently happy with the result. Was very timid and cautious in the beginning which certainly cost me time, but might've saved me more. No particularly punishing route choice legs, and nothing that dramatic to report on.

Extremely slow start. Goofy entry to 3 but no turnaround to 4 comes close to leveling it out. Hesitated exiting 5. Got passed by someone in an orange jersey with navy pants (what country is that?) on the way to 10 and he was out of sight by 12. Saw him sitting in the leader's chair (I think?) after I finished. Got lucky-ish going to 13 (this was not a taped route like it was suggested). I don't think the route choice to 14 was all that bad, but turning around at 13 would've saved a bit. Got lucky-ish again noticing the correct lane to get in on the arena passage (which was awesome!) just in time -- quite a few didn't. Also got lucky-ish finding the start triangle on the map after the map flip just in time to see the best route to 16 -- again, quite a few didn't. I felt very dehydrated at the end and my mouth was very dry. I'm just happy to fight another day and not be completely zonked for the long tomorrow.

Off to WUOC! At the airport, they took my carryon bag saying the flight was overbooked so they’ll check it in. It had all my o-stuff in it. Odds that I’ll ever see that bag again with a 55 minute layover?
