Orienteering long (Long Distance - Mount Lau) 2:19:49 [3] ***** 8.7 km (16:04 / km)
shoes: Olway Tiger

What started out to be a decent weekend of orienteering was soon crushed after the long distance race today... Ran on the Mount Laurie map, which has always given me troubles... not to mention that it was 1:15,000, which complicates things even more - that map is hard enough to read while sitting in a chair!! Screwed up #2, then took FOREVER to find #3... was VERY hesitant to jump into the woods today, especially not knowing exactly where I was leaving a trail or something solid. Had a hard time relocating on the trail by #3, then struggled to find the cut line to #4 (which I did not end up finding until I happened across it on my way to the control...). Was slow to #6, then took my time in the detailed area from 7-13 (with some troubles on #11). Felt really slow for the whole race, and I think my mistakes at the beginning really set the pace for the rest of the race... Was never totally confident with my navigation skills, and tried to take safe route choices that may not have been the fastest... I figure I made at LEAST 34 minutes of mistakes (I am being conservative), so a disappointing race, but at least I finished (was 6th overall, 4th of the women trying for WOC). Blah.

Orienteering race (Middle Distance - Elbow B) 39:55 [4] *** 3.9 km (10:14 / km)
shoes: Olway Tiger

Middle distance of selection races... Started a bit slow and made a few mistakes here and there, but felt really fast in the middle. Mistakes again at 14 and 15. Overall things went pretty well, and I ended up in second place, behind Pam. I am happy with that.

Orienteering (Sprint Distance - Elbow B) 19:38 [4] *** 2.2 km (8:55 / km)
shoes: Olway Tiger

Forest sprint, not all that technically hard, and actually pretty fun. Made a nice big error running to #3 that cost me at least 2.5 minutes!! Made up for that by cranking up the pace for the rest of the race (had the fastest split for 8 or 9 of 18 legs... not terrible). Ended up in second place behind Heather; unfortunately Pam missed our #14, so she was DQ.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1]
shoes: Olway Tiger

Warm-up and cool-down running for both middle and sprint races.

Orienteering 1:02:45 [1]
shoes: Olway Tiger

More control picking on the 9 Bears map; course set by Mike (with good ol' toilet paper). Good exercise in the fine detailed areas of the map - good practice for Mt. Laurie on Sunday.

Orienteering 53:37 [1]
ahr:156 shoes: Olway Tiger

Training on Bow Valley Provincial Park map, shadowed by Mike. Map wasn't great, and I was making some dumb mistakes. Good to get that out of the system now rather than during the weekend races!! Freezing cold, with about 2 cm of snow on the ground, and raining at times... Wore a toque and gloves to fend off the cold.

p.s. Mike wants everyone to know how cool he is... there, I've said it, happy??

Running 30:08 [2]
shoes: New Balance 471 All-Terrain

Easy solo run along the river again today, out to Stanley park and back. Legs are super tired from the past couple days (after doing barely any running last week).

Running 56:18 [2]
ahr:168 max:184 shoes: New Balance 471 All-Terrain

Flew to C-town from Vancouver today. Did a solo run on my old route along Elbow River in Calgary. Crazy to see all the new construction and detours along the trail. Another gorgeous day for a run.
