Running warm up/down 20:31 [3] 2.24 mi (9:10 / mi)
shoes: Hoka Clayton 2

Running 50:18 [3] 8.0 mi (6:17 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Clayton 2

Fartlek: 8 x (1000M @ 5.30, 600M @ 6.00)

Staying in Borrowdale for the weekend - a loop of Derwent Water seemed like the best bet for a flat fartlek. In between the wind, flooding, muddy paths, undulating roads and hunners of tourists it wasn't as flat as hoped but probably the best local option. On account of conditions my splits are all over the place so I went on effort perception mostly - on the rare occasions it was flat & wind-free the watch confirmed I was on pace.

The last mile and half felt really hard, but I stayed in control throughout.

Running warm up/down 19:26 [3] 2.1 mi (9:15 / mi)

Running 1:00:00 [3] 8.5 mi (7:04 / mi)
slept:8.0 shoes: Black Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34

Moderate run in to work this morning. Feeling exhausted today - this was a harder effort than it normally is. Not sure why this is - the week has been pretty standard.

(Will update the last two days this evening.)
12 PM

Massage 1:00:00 [3]

Good session with Kris. 'Next time remind me to start on your quads, they need a lot of work.'

7 AM

Running 25:16 [3] 1.84 mi (13:44 / mi)
slept:8.5

6*90s

I knew there was a group doing hill reps in Queens Park so I decided to do my session along with them a day early. Big mistake - the first few reps felt fine but they got desperate by the end and I was completely off the pace for the last effort.

Definitely need at least two days to recover from the weekend; lesson learned.

Running warm up/down 19:21 [3] 2.19 mi (8:50 / mi)

Monday Feb 24, 2020 #

Running 1:02:48 [3] 7.6 mi (8:16 / mi)
slept:9.0 shoes: Saucony Everun ISO 2

Lunchtime run along the canal and back along the Kelvin. Bumped in to Ross Cruickshanks at Spiers Wharf and ran with him the rest of the way. Did some stride-outs at the end. Legs still quite stiff from the weekend.

10 AM

Running 1:57:01 [3] 9.62 mi (12:10 / mi) +781m 9:43 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

Kilpatricks efforts - various ways up and down The Slacks, trying to avoid flat ground.

Bumped in to Ally Mc and Bethany at one point and had a quick chat about the XC yesterday - all agreed it was hard.

0 - 20 mins: Pissing Rain
20 mins - 1 hour: Glorious sunshine
1 - 1.5 hours: Blizzard
1.5 - 2 hours: Glorious sunshine

Legs felt tired (but not too sore) after yesterday.

1 PM

Running warm up/down 12:38 [3] 1.3 mi (9:43 / mi)
shoes: Brooks N8 CX Spikes

Thanks to flooding & unexpected road closures we arrived with not much time to spare, so the warm-up was shorter than I would've liked.
2 PM

Running 41:32 [3] 6.36 mi (6:32 / mi)
slept:9.0 shoes: Brooks N8 CX Spikes

SCOTTISH NATIONAL XC

The race started just in time for the blizzard to get going so the first lap no one could see anything and just focused on the feet in front of them. Disaster struck 0.5 miles in when I had to stop and tie my shoe-lace; probably lost about 40 places for 10s stopping - managed to make most of them back though.

I was really happy with this race - pushed hard from the beginning, stayed strong throughout. For the last mile my legs felt utterly drained but I had enough left in the tank to hold the pace/not concede any places. Had just enough energy for a sprint finish in the last stretch.

An incredible event this one - so busy that there was never any let up, complete focus required at all times.

Very happy with my performance.

Running 17:15 [3] 1.7 mi (10:09 / mi)
shoes: Brooks N8 CX Spikes

Gave my XC spikes the first wash of the season in the Big Puddle in front of Calendar house.

slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Clayton 2

Running 46:30 [3] 8.0 mi (5:49 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Clayton 2

Fartlek 8*800M (800M). Two laps of Pollok Park + to & from.

2.55 (3.02) 2.50 (2.55) 2.45 (2.58) 2.46 (2.59) 2.47 (3.00) 2.50 (2.59) 2.45 (3.03) 2.47 (3.02)

A bit windy/"corenry" at times but not as bad as expected.

Interesting contrast with doing a similar session this time last week. Last week felt really hard and properly desperate for the last 2 miles. This week's session was challenging, particularly towards the end, but at no point was I in that 'hanging on by the skin of my teeth' zone. Both weeks have been similar in terms of work/sleep/training.

The one difference is the Hokas - a huge contrast even with a newish pair of Nike Pegasus.

Running warm up/down 17:04 [3] 1.95 mi (8:45 / mi)
shoes: Hoka Clayton 2

Lovely clear winter evening.

Running 26:43 [3] 2.68 mi (9:58 / mi)
slept:6.0 shoes: Hoka Clayton 2

Hill Reps: 6*90s (3.5 min rest). At the Queens Park hill.

Moved Wednesday's session back a day as I might have to do the main session on Friday again and wanted a good 2 days rest beforehand.

Legs felt strong throughout - the last rep was hard. From the gate to the cross-road at the top each time.

First time running in a new pair of Hoka Clayton 2's. A definite 'bounce' to these shoes - first time I've worn a pair of road shoes and thought 'Wow - these are different.' Very light and very comfortable too.

8 AM

Running 2:00:52 [3] 10.65 mi (11:21 / mi) +753m 9:18 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Red Inov-8 Mudlaws

Two laps of the Kilpatricks race route with a detour down to the Loch Sloy damn on the second. Took the first one 'Easy' and the second one 'Moderate'.

Storm Ciara in full force so the south side of the hill was basically a waterfall and even at this low height was fair being buffeted around by the wind. At least it wasn't cold!

Felt really good and strong throughout.

Running 1:09:20 [3] 8.5 mi (8:09 / mi)

70" easy recovery run after yesterday. Pollok Park and the Southside.

Legs felt a lot better than I thought they would - Storm Ciara meant some miles felt like running on the spot though.

Running 41:20 [3] 7.0 mi (5:54 / mi)
slept:8.0 shoes: Black Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34

7-mile fartlek; 600M (1000M) Some Southside streets + laps of Pollok Park.

Splits: 2.12 (3.56) 2.08 (3.50), 2.03 (3.50) 2.05 (3.44) 1.58 (3.46) 2.05 (3.45) 2.08 (3.44)

Quite a windy night and I was running in to a headwind sustained periods. I wasn't too fussed with keeping rigidly to the splits and went on feel for the most part.

This was a hard session - the last 1.5 miles was pretty desperate. Feeling absolutely knackered this evening.
