Squad training up Eskdale was super sunny so had quite a nice time going round some courses. I was fighting a loosing battle with the bracken but I wasn’t too concerned about speed. Had a relay thing at the end but it was called short due to time constraints so I never got to find out if my special strategy would have resulted in a win:/. May have got slightly sunburnt but at least the watch tan line is now nice and defined.

Was very windy and rainy which resulted in shorts possibly not being the optimal choice. Half the course was on a really steep feel-side and for some reason my ankles just gave up. Possibly the ice bugs weren’t the best choice.

Horrible scale, not sure why BOF insist on making you run on 1:15k when 1:10 would easily fit on the same bit of paper. It’s not going to give anyone an advantage but it does allow orienteering to be orienteering not guessing. Seemed like the map hadn’t really been simplified when they shrank it. I was very cautious of this round the first few controls but I still spooned 2 a
bit but some elite person did exactly the same thing then lead me into it so that made me feel a bit better. Didn’t really have the fitness to compete on that course I just wanted to finish it. It was way too hot for me and a large part of it was just on some felled open area which was particularly unpleasant. The nice bit was near the end but I was way to tired to appreciate that. Not a great start to running elite but it’s my own fault for doing shit all training over the last few months. Hopefully I can rescue my endurance before summer so I’m not that much of a liability at Jukola.

Middle champs at summerhouse knot: first loop 1-4 was pretty scrappy in the rocky part of the map. Got quite used to doing middle stuff on 1:7500 so 1:10k was a bit of a change especially on such a detailed area, due to a lack of pace I figured the only way I could not embarrass myself was to not make any mistakes, luckily I managed to get round the first bit cleanly but quite steady. Decided towing a load of m16s round wasn’t ideal so I binned them pretty quick once things got more runnable and cruised round the rest. Wasted a little bit of time on 12 as I slightly underestimated the distance. Finished 12th which is worse than the last British middle but still not too bad considering the state my legs were in.
