Running - trail race (Causeway ultra) 6:25:40 [3] 39.81 mi (9:41 / mi) +3491ft 8:57 / mi
Started off the run feeling great and well prepared for the day ahead. The first 15 miles/2 hours or so went in quickly and very comfortably and was fuelling as planned with tailwind and gels. Started to feel a bit of sickness after this with the same feeling I have had on other races and training runs. I knew it was going to be difficult to take on board any more fuel after this. I was still able to run quite well during this period which lasted for about an hour at which point I started to feel better. I had stopped eating or drinking during this period and was feeling extremely concerned about my prospects for the rest of the race. I also had some blinking vision. The first drop bags were at mile 23 or so and I was looking forward to getting the small bottle of coke I had in there knowing that Coke has helped to settle my stomach in the past. I drunk only this and some water for the next 8 or 9 miles until I reached the next drop bag. Again I had another small bottle of coke (375ml) which I used to get me to the finish along with some water. After the spell of sickness mentioned above I felt generally ok for the rest of the race and was surprised at how strong I felt given the fuelling method! I was able to finish strongly and in the end was really happy with my time, particularly when compared to last year.
