Running - trail race (Maurice Mullins ultra) 5:29:26 [4] 31.63 mi (10:25 / mi) +6057ft 8:49 / mi
slept:5.0

Up at 5am to drive south, picking up a few others along the way. Back and rest of my body was feeling good so I had no doubts about participating in the race. Great day for it too with little wind and clear skies. Race ended up as a tale of two halves. First half went very well although I may have started out a bit too hard. Fuelling was going well also. At the turnaround point I picked up my drop bag and walked for a while whilst I had a banana and some coke before starting running uphill again. This portion was a fairly long climb and I noticed that I was starting to tire. It was a struggle to reach the top although I was ok again on the next downhill / flat section. The final long uphill is where things got quite tough. I had started to feel a bit sick which meant I wasn’t taking any fuel on board which I’m turn meant running low on energy. I eventually had to stop and throw up 5 times. Felt a lot better after this and was able to persevere on to the finish in just under the 5hr30 mark (which was my target). Good to get the race into my legs but really need to sort this fuelling problem over the next few weeks.
Also worth noting that i didn’t have any trouble with my back during the race and it is also fine today (Sunday) so hopefully that is now resolved.

Treadmill (Easy) 30:00 [1] 3.07 mi (9:46 / mi)

Short treadmill run. No pain from the back. Given that I haven’t felt any pain in it at all for a while I’m going to give the race a go tomorrow

(rest day)

Travelling up from London to Oxford. Didn’t arrive at hotel until quite late so wasn’t able to manage a run

Running - road (Easy) 48:31 [3] 6.22 mi (7:48 / mi) +87ft 7:42 / mi
slept:6.0

Staying over in London so ran out and back from the hotel, roughly 3 miles each way. Took about 15 mins in the hotel room stretching with particular focus on my back then set out onto the street. Nice evening for running, cool with little wind. I am not staying near any parks so had to run on the roads rather than grass. Started out at a very easy / comfortable pace feeling good with no trouble from my back. When I turned I maintained a similar pace but introduced some faster paced portions every so often. Again this felt good and it was nice to stretch the legs out whilst running a bit faster. Really pleased with how these last two runs in particular have gone as I haven’t felt anything in my back. Also feeling a bit sharper

Running - Grass (Easy) 40:52 [3] 5.26 mi (7:46 / mi) +189ft 7:31 / mi

Short run after work prior to attending my physio appointment (see email). Run went well with no back trouble whatsoever. Ran as I felt which ended up being progressive as I was feeling good after yesterday’s rest day.
