Running - mixed terrain (Moderate) 1:35:08 [3] 12.53 mi (7:36 / mi) +685ft 7:13 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR 5 (blue)

Out and back run along the coastal trails from Portrush to Portstewart strand. Very wet day, waited til a bit of a break in the really heavy rain before going out. Stretched and did lunges, calf raises and leg swings in the caravan first. Felt good initially but when I hit the undulating trail section (just under 2 miles in to the run) I felt a bit crappy. I think it was just the change in terrain causing an increase in effort level as that feeling didn’t last and I ended up having one of my best ever runs on this route. The flatter sections felt really good and like I was just gliding over them. The smaller hills felt good too. Really enjoyed running in the cooler temps and rain, so refreshing after the recent hotter weather! I think this type of run/pace is my comfort zone at the minute.

Running - mixed terrain (Easy) 1:15:26 [3] 9.44 mi (7:59 / mi) +212ft 7:49 / mi
slept:7.5 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Easy run down into Ballyclare, out and back along the old railway trail, around the park and a few laps around the grass pitches. Then back home. Felt ok, a bit tired on the way home though. No muscular aches or pains or noticeable effects from last nights race.

Running - trail (Easy) 20:01 [2] 2.43 mi (8:14 / mi) +124ft 7:51 / mi

Warmup + 6 strideouts

Running - trail race (Giants Trail Race) 41:50 [5] 5.96 mi (7:01 / mi) +425ft 6:34 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR 5 (blue)

Race went ok although I was disappointed to see I finished approx 30 secs slower than last year. Felt like I’d had a decent run and definitely felt better than I did last year, probably because I was a little more conservative at the start. Mile 4 seems to be where I lost some time, this is a nett downhill mile and comes before a tough 2 mile uphill finish. I think I was overthinking it at this stage and trying to keep too much in the tank. Anyway, a good workout nonetheless.

Running - road (Easy) 50:24 [2] 6.42 mi (7:51 / mi) +184ft 7:39 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Easy road run. Went out quite late after playing in the garden with the kids. Skipped the hill sprints as it was getting quite dark and I didn’t have a head torch with me. Felt good and comfortable. The shoes felt great again too, considering racing in them tomorrow night.

Running - trail (Easy + hilly fartlek) 1:14:44 [3] 9.44 mi (7:55 / mi) +656ft 7:26 / mi
slept:6.5 shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR 5 (blue)

20 easy / 30 hilly fartlek / 25 easy
Drove to Woodburn Forest after work which has a mix of forest fire roads, single track trail and grassy/muddy trails. Leg swings (forwards and sideways), lunges, calf raises and a few of the other warm up exercises in the car park as usual before setting off. Ran in my new Hoka Challengers which felt so much better than the Pegasus trails I wore on Sunday. First 20 mins easy felt good. During the 30 min fartlek I felt great on the shallower uphill gradients but found the steeper gradients tough. Maybe this is just stating the obvious! I do feel I still need to work at improving on the hills ahead of upcoming races. I can tell that this type of workout will really help. The second easy run felt really good with a feeling of being able to run on forever

Running - trail (Easy) 1:01:58 [2] 7.57 mi (8:11 / mi) +38ft 8:09 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Easy run around Victoria Park in Belfast followed by 6 strideouts. This park has a nice mix of paved paths, trails and grass areas and I ran on all of them! Probably more of the run was on the trails as there was good shelter from the hot sun as they run through a heavily wooded area. It’s also pretty much pancake flat. Felt good on this run, helped by a new pair of shoes - Hoka Rincon. This was my first run in these and I can tell they will work well for me. I wanted something similar to the Clifton but with a lighter/faster feel and these seem to fit the bill. The strideouts to finish felt really good.

Turbo trainer 52:11 [2]
slept:6.5

Feeling tired and low when I got in from work and didn’t really feel like doing anything other than going to bed. Got some bad news about a colleague in work which has been a factor. Decided to take the family out for a walk around Ballyboley and felt much better after that so got on the bike when we got home. Took it really easy for the first 5 mins then got into it more and more. Felt much better when finished.
