Running race (Trail) 5:20:00 [5] 28.0 mi (11:26 / mi) +1800m 9:32 / mi
Transvulcania Marathon
Really cold, wet and windy to start. Bus dropped me off 90 minutes before the start and I did get a bit cold, should have been more prepared but wasn't expecting it. Took the first few miles steady to warm up and see how the legs felt after the VK. Maybe should have pushed a bit harder from the off as I did get stuck in queues (lots of ultra runners) once the trails narrowed.
Legs felt strong on the uphills and I was eating plenty early on, keen to make the most of the cooler conditions while I was still in the cloud. Hard to get a good consistent pace with so many people on a narrow trail.
Continued feeling strong all the way up to Roque so I decided I wanted to carry on. Took a bit of time at the aid station as I'd cut my hand and needed it cleaned, went to the toilet and had some food before heading off at a steady pace.
The first few kilometres of the descent I felt really good until I started to get some GI distress (may have eaten too much the day before or the heat may have gotten to me) so I slowed right down to a jog. Continued at a very easy pace for the rest of the race, paying close attention to how my legs were feeling and not working them too hard.
I think I struggled a bit with the heat and couldn't handle much more than water/juice/fruit at the aid stations and probably didn't get enough calories in during the second half of the race. My quads felt a bit sore on some of the really steep road sections towards the bottom but overall held up pretty well.
Finihsed feeling pretty comfortable and not too stiff/sore right now (6 hours later)
