Hill Running race 9:36:00 [5] 50.0 mi (11:31 / mi) +9700ft 9:44 / mi

2018 Lakeland 50

First Ultra
Target time was 9 hours, ran 9.36.

Weather, extremely mixed, started in sunshine but heavy rain and wind after 8 miles onwards meant less than ideal conditions. Weather very changeable all day,

Nutrition - 500 ml Tailwind, 500ml Water with Nuun Tablet, 1 Gel\Shotbloks, 1 Banana every hour or as close as possible. =400 Calories. This seemed to work well and thankfully I felt solid all day.

Overall extremely pleased as my training leading up to the event had been fractured by 2 holidays. This meant that cumulative mileage was lower than I would have liked and that my fitness didn't feel as good as it had earlier in the year.

Nervous on the day, just wanted to get running and see how the day would pan out.

Started at the front due to large number of participants and the fact that I didn't know what the first 4 miles held. Was great to see Kev fire off into the distance but when I looked at my watch during the first mile and the pace said 6.20 I slammed the brakes on! Needless to say lots of people overtook me at this point. Some breathing extremely hard (it was very early on in the race!)

The plan was to run the race on HR no higher than 150 and once I got out of the field and through Pooley Bridge I was able to settle down and stick to that HR.

Great fun in the first few miles, easy running and sunshine, lots of spectators clapping. Saw Carol just before Pooley Bridge. Great atmosphere.

Ran through Pooley Bridge, out on the open fells and onto the first hill. Hiked\Ran most of this then there is a nice undulating section to the first checkpoint. Felt great and made some progress overtaking the odd 50 runner and multiple 100 runners. I made sure to give every 100 runner I met throughout the day lots of encouragement as they had endured some tough weather through the night !

Rain started about 8 miles, still hadn't reached the first checkpoint, due around 11 miles. Decided I wouldn't put my jacket on even though the majority had done this.

Arrived at the first CP, Howtown feeling great, Refilled bottles with Tailwind and Nuun which was going to lose me time throughout the day as the Inov8 bottles have very small lids meaning they are difficult to get powder, large tablets into etc. Knew this would be the case beforehand but decided to see how I got on. Grabbed a few Bananas on the way out and I was on my way towards the first big climb of the day - Fusedale.

Ran to the bottom of Fusedale and hiked when it felt like the right thing to do. Needless to say this is where I started to feel cold, hiked half way and had to give in and stop for my rain jacket. Conditions terrible at this stage, rain, wind and fog. Unfortunately I soon realised my rain jacket was at the bottom of my pack which meant try and a might, I couldn't get to it without unpacking the whole bag. This wasted what felt like an long time but was probably 4-5 mins.

Got going again and knew I had made the correct decision to stop for the jacket as the weather would continue all of the way up Fusedale, over High Kop, down to Low Kop and along Ulswater.

Twisted ankle badly on High Kop and ran\limped for a bit which slowed me down. Made it down and along Ulswater without any further issue.

Got to CP2 feeling fine, weather still wild, number had fallen off my pack so I tried to stick it to my shorts, no chance!

In and out of the checkpoint as before but no Bananas so I filled my bag up with Haribo. I was dreading the climb up Mardale head as I had been here twice before and felt like death on both on both occasions.

Thankfully, I felt strong, hiked the whole way, eat Haribos and passed few 50 runners. Passed a few more on the descent which felt good as I recognised a few from going flying past me at the start.

Stopped to remove jacket at the bottom as the sun was now out again.

Cant remember too much until I got to CP 3 where I refilled with Mountain Fuel (which was good) and tried to eat a bowl of pasta and jog, didn't work so went back to Bananas and what I was carrying etc

Met Marco and Debbie going up Kentmere which was a great surprise and perked me up. Marco said I looked good so I hoped he meant it and wasn't just saying that. He said that Kev had been leading but had dropped back a few spots and was finding the weather tough.

Said Good bye to Marco, overtook one more 50 runner and ran the rest of the way down to Troutbeck on my own. Felt like I was making good progress but was caught by one guy who flew by me going up the hill past the Post office. He looked very strong and my goal was to reach Ambleside feeling good so I didn't want to react. I was enjoying myself at this point again reflecting on how bad I had felt at Troutbeck in the past whereas I was feeling fine now.

Ran down into Ambleside to meet Carol at the checkpoint hoping she would save me some time grabbing food for me etc. Rain really started again.

Through the CP, into toilet.

Onwards out of Ambleside and down to the Hotel. A nice flat few miles running behind a guy who looked good but kept stopping to walk. I felt like I was struggling a little at this point so I was too keen to stop and walk too. This was a mistake if only for a minute at a time etc.

Whacked a gel and a few shotbloks, put my rain jacket back on as the weather really took a bad turn and made it to Chapel Stile CP. Usual story, but had some Coke instead of Tailwind. Hoped Coke would be a magic bullet as never ran with this before but it didn't seem to do anything.

Felt fine running to unmanned CP and down to land rover track. Very slight hill for a few miles, caught a few 50 runners who were hiking but I actually felt ok to run (albeit slowly) so managed to get past a few more.

Got to Tilberthwaite CP, finally realised that I could have my bottles out and empty (if required) before hitting the CP which would save some time.

Filled up with some water only and got hiking up the stairs out of the CP. Took a Gel and some Shotbloks. This section seemed to go on for longer than I expected and was very wet\rocky underfoot. Passed maybe one or two more and made it to the final descent. This was treacherous as its very rocky and wet. Slipped backwards and hit my lower back on a rock. Didn't hurt at the time but is swollen now.

Ran down into Coniston and round to the finish, felt fantastic.

Met Carol and Caroline at the finish. Very happy!

Takeaways for next time -
Nutrition worked well even though I was getting sick of it all by the end.

Consider different pack - Inov8 pack is flawed for quick access to main compartment meaning you need to remove the pack which in turn means contents of side pockets empty themselves on the ground.

Inov8 bottles are not great for refilling with powder etc. Salomon bottles etc have much wider tops but don't fit into the Inov8 pack due to straws etc,

Choose areas to put in hard efforts towards the end rather than just run consistently.
