More bass track with Ella. Really is such a nice route even with the out and back. Ella solved her hydration issues so was running much better today.

Drigg Technique

3drerun

Quickroute

Kept the effort steady and technique was pretty decent. Tricky without north lines on Joe's autogenerated map so minimal compass work and mostly just reading contours. Got into the map nicely by the end and felt like I was able to stay on the line with just the contours. Slightly wayward at the start and probably some suboptimal lines plus a mispunch at 2 which tbf was about 10m from the actual feature but mostly good stuff and just a really fun area. So much of it as well, could definitely hold a major champs here. Just a shame we can't get permissions.

WCOC Summer Series - High Rigg

Bit scrappy and the typical uphill struggles but just about managed to pip Matt Atkinson for the win. First 2 good then was just slightly too low to 3 on the wrong hill but quickly realised. 4 and 5 were clean then went straighter to 6, planning to gradually climb up to the control but first had to drop a little height to avoid a rocky section and then ran straight into a massive section of completely unmapped course. Didn't back out as I thought it can't be too big as it was nowhere on the map but it just kept getting thicker and thicker and I ended up spending nearly a minute fighting through it while grumbling about the map.

Spent a lot of effort doing that so was cooked on the hill to 6 and then 7 but hit both okay. Route to 8 going right felt a bit rogue and probably wasn't optimal but I don't think it was too bad and gave a nice line into the control which I hit cleanly. Tried to contour round into 9 but the going was rough and ended up slightly low so probably should've gone straighter or stayed on the fence. Then to 10 tried to just go straight over the crag but bottled it once I got there and had to go round to the right and dropped a lot into the control which was further down the re entrant than I thought. Should've come round to the crag to the left. 11 was fine just along the path then following the track in. Then finally to the tricky finish my line wasn't as straight as I'd like but my approach to the control was good and I hit it cleanly. A few small mistakes plus the gorse incident but decent nav other than that and was moving okay on anything that wasn't uphill. Also wraps up a big day with a good amount of technique. I enjoy these high volume days and should do more of them.

Another jog along the bass track with Ella. 5mins longer and slightly faster this time which is good to see. Ella learning the pains of not hydrating properly.

Warrior Battleaxe - Birkett Houses

Quickroute

A few smaller direction errors at 4, 8, 9 and 10 where I came off my compass at points in the leg and drifted off line probably should've been the warning signs for a bigger mistake like 15. However I continued to switch off during parts of the leg and was punished for it when we hit the tricky last forest section. Plan was to come round the hill and drop into the control from the re entrant to the north but once I got to the first line of crags I just switched off and didn't check my compass instead following the first re entrant I saw going downhill when I should've been going uphill. Quickly realised something wasn't quite right but once I popped out below the second line of crags I thought it was still the first and the re entrant I was in was the one to the north of 15. Started heading south before spotting the fence and getting really confused. Hesitated for a bit before realising where I was and scrambling up the cliff face and doing one final hesitation while trying to figure out which hill I was next to. Big problem here is switching off at a key point in the leg and not using my compass when I needed to make a direction change. Full focus is always required and especially so in tricky sections like that so just can't afford to get complacent. Also should've trusted my instincts when everything felt wrong while going down that re entrant and relocated there which would've cut down the time I lost. If everything feels wrong it probably is wrong.

Apart this big mistake and the other smaller direction errors I was orienteering okay but just generally felt a bit out of control throughout the course and wasn't good enough with my map contact or compass. Focus not where it needs to be for tricky areas like this. Routechoice wise I think straight to 5 was better as round doesn't save much climb and straight gives a very nice line into the control. Also went left to 12 to avoid the crags and get the benefits of the road but in hindsight right was quite a bit straighter so probably should've gone that way. Physically felt good in the first half but started to labour more once we got into the open to 12 and was struggling up the hills at the end as is always the case. Not moving too badly though which is nice to see.

Out along the river and back with Dad and Daisy then another town loop with just Dad. Tried out a few fartlek style efforts to make daisy's revision break runs more fun. Don't think it quite worked but I enjoyed it. Should add in more strides to my easy runs I think.

Navigation Trails recce. Pretty pleased with my courses although might be a bit hilly so will try to reduce the climb. Such a fun area though. Great place to do the event.
