orienteering race 3:05:00 [4] *** 26.0 km (7:07 / km) +150m 6:55 / km

GRR adv race today. i would consider it orienteering , however we had maybe a quarter of it running on trail.
Foreigners adjusted to the last minute changed in schedule and had Mick as an 'over-month' ( not overnight ) foreigner due to his 'trip south , plus his background ( really we were truly just 2 and half - foreigners). when i saw the maps and no matrix, i knew will be a tough one against wildernesstraverse ( since only one strong navigator but 2 strong teammates ) but somehow easier against Hammer/Sudden team ( since they had a great 3rd navigator). settled in 2/3 position roughly after 1 until the end of first butterfly loop. And then i remembered the video course setter posted where he lied to us. crossing a just bellow waist deep marsh/water twice in a race. we did it 3 times (cause of the 3 butterfly loops). and it was cold, and it was deep. times 3.

butterfly loop 2 and 3 Ok but we were like 2 min behind second ( Hammer/Sudden) and 6 min or so behind wildernesstraverse. our teammate was suffering ( but she wouldn't say why till later- after race. one stick in the eye, and 2 big falls that put grimaces on her face , but she just kept going. tough cookie this lady ). shortly after 2h into race we had some chasing to do, and we accomplished that. Caught Sudden/Hammer team and just passed them with maybe 15 min to race. and then here comes trouble. took my a while to get pull out the detailed map for 'blast zone' ( a zone with tens of controls -like mines- but only 2 were 'good'. i was actually moving ahead with the main map in one hand , the detailed on the other, and trying to keep a decent pace- but not good enough to know where actually i was going. luckly the other team were more cool then us and picked the 2 'good controls' and had only 40-60 m ahead. and boy what we had to put through last 500 m to try to catch them , which we did and then with them taking a slightly longer loop we were lucky enough to secure 2nd place. 6 minutes behind winners. kudos to them and to 3rd place too. and thanks Chris P and GHO gang who was behind this. so today i am really happy with this 2nd place - my knee bothered me quite a bit since mid january snowshoe raid, but i was OK. Ula was kind of out of shape ( per her say) with exams and not only. and Mick behaved just fine- like a foreigner :)
coming next, i think foreigners will be happy to compete again. against all of the fine folks that made the crowd today..
and not only
time for some fine training in weeks to come.
oh. yeah sleep wasn't at all great last night ( almost like last saturday- no really migraine but head ache and woke up 4-5 times for a 6h sleep. i managed another 1h nap this afternoon. and with work on afternoon shift for the next 2 weeks, looks like spring is on its way. at least for me.
