New Forest Spring Sportive - 67 mile(ish) Standard
What do you do when tendonitis stops you from running for some months. All the depressing months when you think you will never be good at something again.
The only thing to do? Accept a challenge.
Soo nervous driving down, worried that the bikes wouldn't stay on the bike rack.
Soooo nervous waiting for the start, especially looking at the whizzy bikes around me compared to my mountain bike with ‘road’ tyres on.
Why? I really don't know. It was amazing.
Because we had to adjust my saddle down to get Simon's bike on the rack, I really didn't feel too comfortable at the height I'd reset it to until we stopped just after Burley at around 17 miles. My thighs were feeling ridiculously tired for only having ridden that far. Adjusted the saddle and for the rest of the ride I felt great. Cold strong wind all the time we headed east which made the going pretty tough, but at least it was dry. Traffic was heavier than I expected.
Some memorable moments - Could do nothing but stop dead when a large herd of ponies unexpectedly decided to run across the road after we entered the New Forest at Bransgore; Hilarious donkey standing stock still on the opposite side of the road waiting for it's picture to be taken, no way was any car going to pass (it’s name was Eddie Murphy I reckon); The villages and the New Forest were, simply, glorious. Feed stops at 26miles and 45miles were brilliant (especially the cherry cake). And I managed to keep cycling up the hill I was dreading at mile 50.
Thanks to Simon for making me believe I could do 67 miles. Hopefully you didn’t hear me say ‘yeah, why not’ when, a few miles from the finish, you suggested we go for 100 miles next time?! Maybe, but if there are lots of hills, I need a road bike.
