Orienteering (Night o) 1:15:00 [1] 8.0 km (9:23 / km)
A cold wet and windy night in Goteborg. Exercise was aimed at getting the control circle by blanking out the area around it. Forced to hit an early attack point and be confident into control.
Was feeling good clear head a bit tired but keen to train.
Started steady along path found it very tricky to know if I was in control. Got myself a little confused. But good reminder that on first control important to be careful and get a feel for the terrain. No real plan. 2 follow end of spur nice line round hill and in, was a little right of control. 3 good bearing and took it steady on line was checking off marsh, crag, coming into control was tricky a little right. 4 I made quite tricky could barely see any map. Good bearing was option via high knolls then down, felt a little left so when descending cane round into renetrant. 5 good bearing out aiming for hill and big renetrant and to come off small spur. Very tricky into control, but think I got it. Aimed for right line to stay out of marsh. Went smoothly however struggled to know exactly where I was at. Saw other orienteers which was strange. 7 was tricky aim for up renetrant and come off at cliff edge. Came a bit too far left. 8 bearing out to path then up ridge was nice to follow, used marsh as entry point. 9 tricky to break leg into chunks so sat in a bearing. Was pushed left by crags and relocate don path and in. 10 bearing out to hill could have been a better one came left again. 10 tried going between marshes which was fine then along path too control. 12 spot on the line. Bit off putting with large cliff before which I couldn’t see. Bearing used hill tops to follow to finish.
Summary
- seems to be common for me to flick left just before control eg 2,4,,6,7,,10,, need to have a clear bearing
- simplifying works well, if tricky to simply then take good bearing look ahead or slow down, depending on where in the leg
- know what you want head up into control
