BOK Local Orienteering Race - Green - GPS a bit screwy

Not sure what happened to the GPS, it’s all over the place - a bit like the fact that I mis-punched at no16. Daft mistake as I ran straight past it!

Bit of analysis:

1. initially phased by the map scale and didn’t go far enough along the path - quickly corrected and rounded the building corner to find Jamie Hayward just coming out from the covered area - straight into the control and chased after Jamie

2. Through the first canopy and then hesitated to see which way to cross road - took south and through the gap in the building - up over the grass bank to only find that the other side was uncrossable and needed to go round - lost 10 secs

3. Straight north through next gap in buildings and to the left of the block up to the fence - should have gone right - but instead clambered through the fence - again another 15 sec loss

4. Straight south and attacked the control from the north of the building - spiked and out

5. Into the forest and took a bearing and struck to it at pace - spiked

6. Out on to the path and kept and eye on the buildings through the trees to make sure I went far enough - spiked and out

7. Longer leg around the edge of the golf course - fast - but then too hesitant into the crag area and went in too early - lost 30 seconds before realising that I was at the wrong crag

8. Straight along the path and then mid-read the map - thought I was looking for a spur with a knoll - didn’t see the single tag on the contour and that I was actually looking for a depression. Lost 30 seconds - and Jamie re-caught me up!

9. Wrong route choice - just didn’t see the path on the edge of the white - and instead took the path through the grotty green area - popped out at the top of the open area and was surprised to see Jamie way ahead of me! Hammered it across the field to catch him

10. Took a bearing and stuck to it - spiked the control in the forest

11. Back up the hill - chasing Jamie and starting to catch him - spiked the control

12. Out through the fence - over took Jamie and straight up to the feature - spiked

13. Unsure of route as not sure if the dark green would have passable areas - took a gamble and found a route through - despite the cows blocking the way! Spiked the control

14. Decided to stick to the path for speed and climbed the hill - straight into the control and spiked

15. Stayed lower out of 14 to make sure I didn’t need to clamber over the rocky area. Contoured round and straight into the control. Spiked.

16. Oh dear! Took the lower path and managed to run straight past the control without dibbing it! Miss-punch - idiot

17. Climbed up onto the path and then was hesitant on which crag the control would be on - wasted a bit of time - should have just run to the path junction would have been much faster.

18/19/20/21 Up onto the corner of the open and straight across the field - cross country running now for the final four controls - quick compass bearings and fast straight running

Tio mil lunchtidskörning

Had early morning work calls and a work dinner this evening - so needed to rearrange my day to still fit in my exercise fix!
Gentle longer lunch time run - with the odd 10 second hill sprint chucked in along the route to spice things up.

NGOC - Painswick Beacon - Brown Middle Distance Orienteering Race

Was taking it easy after a longish run yesterday - just enjoying a day out finding controls - nice to be able to run up the hills for once, seems my fitness is improving - just need to work on my navigation now!

https://www.stryd.com/powercenter/run/574668457305...

https://www.strava.com/activities/2786519912/overv...

https://www.ngoc.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#137&co...

So a bit of analysis:

1. Tentative into 1 - not wanting to overshoot due to 1:7500 map scale - somehow still managed to!

2. Took the path route to 2 - happy with the route and pace into the control

3. Oh dear! managed first of all to veer to far inn the dark green and got slowed down by some grot. Then managed to look on the wrong crag for the control - up and down like a yo-yo! Trying to go too fast - and should have stopped and planed my route.

4. Back into the swing of it into 4 - but could have been more direct

5. OK to 5 on the path - but hesitant into the control circle - could have probably used the light green as a catching feature - just worried it might be too vague

6. Found that the light green was NOT vague - but instead slowed me right down - would have been better off coming back to the path and then taking an easier route into the control. Found it easy enough - just slowed by coming out of 5

7. Raining heavy now - and struggled to see the map through my glasses. Was ok into the control - just route choice was a bit indirect before the control circle

8. Wrong direction out of 7 meant that I had to re-orientate and lost time - was ok once I picked up the knoll on the map

9. Straight up the hill into 9 - spiked and out - nice! Used my new found fitness to run the whole way

10. Happy with route choice - and executed fine - again spiked

11. Took the path - easier than the long grass - was a bit hesitant into the control circle

12. Straight onto the golf course grass - faster running - and hit control easy

13. Got caught again in the light green - very grotty and should have learned earlier in the course to avoid it - doh! Was slowed and took way too long

14. Happy with keeping the control - and even got a bit of pace as I neared the circle - spiked control.

15. Bad route choice - should have compassed at the junction and gone straight in the white - but took the path thinking it would be quicker only to find I was then slow down the steep slope

16. Nav fine - compassed straight and spike - just slow up the very steep hill

17. Quickly along the path - and almost fell onto the control by accident and I was hesitant and not sure that I was in the circle

18. OMG - that hill out of 17 was almost dangerous it was so steep! not sure if going up the spur would have been better and using the fence to help? OK once up - and straight into 18.

19. Silly mistake by not seeing the map properly (had taken my glasses off by this stage as it was raining too much) - went around the light green patch - and didn't realise that is would be the other side of the electric fence - so lost a minute faffing

20. Spiked 20 - straight to it - only got a bit distracted by our dog appearing

21. Straight into the control - spiked again

22. Another bad route choice - rather than going straight - got a little confused by the contours and went to far round to the really big depression - then down into it very slowly as I was worried I would turn my ankle. Fine once down - and straight into the control

23. Oh dear - should have slowed first and looked at the map! ended up on the first spur - which was the wrong one - and ran around like a headless chicken before realising and then finally realising my mistake and making it to the right one.

24. Spiked - got a bit of pace along the path - no mistakes!

25. Straight out onto the grass and then followed the path into the depression - spiked

26. Fine - but too slow on the hill descent - again worried about my ankle

27. Climbed too quickly up rather than compassing - probably lost a bit of time - easy into the control once on the top of the hill

28. Straight round the trees and spiked the control

29. Bosh

30. Finish
