northern champs - burbage
4th W18 + W20. initially i was pretty bummed with this run - struggled physically, nav was far from smooth and also missing out on the podium is never fun. on hindsight, there were a lot of elements of my race which went well and my result was actually quite good for a 1st year so pretty pleased but definitely not satisfied. (4th england as well so solid start for trying to get selected for JHIs). nav was solid until a blip at #7 where i was too low but still saw the control yet i thought it wasn’t mine so ended up going a little too far until i went back and got it. worst leg was to #8, got a bit panicked coming out of #7 and decided for the straight route-choice so ended up on the path outside the 1;2000 area without much idea of exactly where i was. continued so so hesitantly into the boulder field and even stood still for perhaps 45s trying to figure out where exactly i was. saw a control that could be mine and surprisingly it was - thankyou to the orienteering gods for that one. nav was pretty good through the micro-nav section with no big time losses but a bit scrappy - took a minute to get used to the scale as stuff was coming up so quickly which was a massive change from the earlier course. pretty happy to get through there with no big mistakes though - brimham rocks and yesterday definitely contributed to that. nav was pretty good for the rest of the course, not spiking the controls though and a big hesitation on #18 where i was a little too far to the left. honestly just really struggling through the heather, just so difficult and really sapped my energy. obviously work to be done regarding stamina and terrain running. pleased that i didn’t get hungry on this course as i really tried to make sure i fueled myself before my run - did take some sweets this time as well, didn’t need them but good to have them just in case. also a big positive is that my mental attitude was v good, didn’t write myself off before i even started and was up for it and felt motivated. tried to keep this throughout but hard too with all the tough terrain - a big step forward to have it initially though so will keep working on it to make sure i can keep my motivation sustained for as long as possible. this run definitely ‘fueled the fire’ for the next selection races and onwards to BOC long now - already started geeking ;)
also WCOC 2nd, 3rd + 4th in W18 - looking good for british relays!!!
