northern champs - burbage

4th W18 + W20. initially i was pretty bummed with this run - struggled physically, nav was far from smooth and also missing out on the podium is never fun. on hindsight, there were a lot of elements of my race which went well and my result was actually quite good for a 1st year so pretty pleased but definitely not satisfied. (4th england as well so solid start for trying to get selected for JHIs). nav was solid until a blip at #7 where i was too low but still saw the control yet i thought it wasn’t mine so ended up going a little too far until i went back and got it. worst leg was to #8, got a bit panicked coming out of #7 and decided for the straight route-choice so ended up on the path outside the 1;2000 area without much idea of exactly where i was. continued so so hesitantly into the boulder field and even stood still for perhaps 45s trying to figure out where exactly i was. saw a control that could be mine and surprisingly it was - thankyou to the orienteering gods for that one. nav was pretty good through the micro-nav section with no big time losses but a bit scrappy - took a minute to get used to the scale as stuff was coming up so quickly which was a massive change from the earlier course. pretty happy to get through there with no big mistakes though - brimham rocks and yesterday definitely contributed to that. nav was pretty good for the rest of the course, not spiking the controls though and a big hesitation on #18 where i was a little too far to the left. honestly just really struggling through the heather, just so difficult and really sapped my energy. obviously work to be done regarding stamina and terrain running. pleased that i didn’t get hungry on this course as i really tried to make sure i fueled myself before my run - did take some sweets this time as well, didn’t need them but good to have them just in case. also a big positive is that my mental attitude was v good, didn’t write myself off before i even started and was up for it and felt motivated. tried to keep this throughout but hard too with all the tough terrain - a big step forward to have it initially though so will keep working on it to make sure i can keep my motivation sustained for as long as possible. this run definitely ‘fueled the fire’ for the next selection races and onwards to BOC long now - already started geeking ;)

also WCOC 2nd, 3rd + 4th in W18 - looking good for british relays!!!

dvo event - birchen edge

really cool area and pretty good practise for tomorrow - obviously not completely similar but the micro-nav in all the boulders should be good for the 1;2000 section. nav was pretty good, a couple of minor mistakes just losing 5-10s and some hesitation throughout but no big time losses. once again, not really pushing at all but also not taking it like a shake-out or anything just sort of cruising i guess. enjoyed it a lot out there and good to get my head into a map especially an intricate one like this. another brown as well so good experience.

endcliffe campus o

feeling quite heavy legged after last night so took this at a sort of mid-way pace, not pushing but definitely wouldn’t call it jogging either. pretty fun course and a cool area so enjoyed it a lot. used this to help get me in the zone for the weekend by getting into a map. nav was good, not sure my route-choice was always perfect though. not much to say about this one really.

high doat o

a very intense night series finale as i was one point behind emma who was in the lead for the ‘junior female’ on the long course. started off very good and spiking the controls but then went way too high at #6 and lost a good 30s here. tried to not let it throw me but i think it did a bit which was unfortunate. took the scenic route on the long leg and lost quite a bit of time here so emma practically caught me up (after starting a few mins behind me) so towed her round the next few until #12 where we both got very confused but i managed to find it quite a while before her so got a relatively big gap again (~45s maybe). nav was then very good and feeling motivated until #18 where i got very confused as there was multiple small crags in the control circle and i thought it was just going to be a singular crag so lost 30s faffing about here and emma caught me back up. then got very fired up and sprinted the last 2 controls, actually managed to get a reasonable gap again but too much to do in too little time :( still enjoyed the run and it was very exciting! also pretty happy to be finished with night orienteering until november. also well done to emma for winning!!!
