Burrator Horseshoe hill race

A great turnout for a Devon hill race. 170 runners with a fairly strong field too. Former Jura winner Tim Lenton and Jo Meek being some of the familiar faces. Slightly altered and longer course than previous years.

Ran in the leading pack of 3 for the first 3/4 of the race. Never felt comfortable and generally felt very tired. 2 climbs in the race but very small by comparison to the Scottish hills! Took the descents cautiously and didn’t completely let go as I would normally, mainly to avoid taking any risks with the ankle but also didn’t feel like I had the energy in me. The other 2 in the leading pack broke away on the final climb, I kept them in sight but had nothing in me to reel them back in. Finished in 3rd about a minute off the winner. Not my best race but happy enough that the ankle got around some rough terrain without causing me any bother.

It was a mid afternoon race so I’d spent the morning finishing off the drive to Devon, about 6 hours all in all... I think that definitely played a part in the low energy levels and generally feeling tired. Not something I want to repeat before a race in the future. Nice to get a run out in the Dartmoor sun though.

60’ easy + hill sprints
Still at Glenmore on a course with work so had to get out early again before that started. Great way to start the day though on some trails around Meall a Buchaille. Hill sprints certainly woke me up a bit.
Late finish at work followed by about 5 hours driving south enroute to Devon. Very tired.

60’ Easy + strideouts

Away to Aviemore with work today so got out early in the morning before the drive. Out and back along the canal from the house. All very easy with strideouts to finish. Watch charging so a slight estimate with distance. Bumped into Ally at Glenmore lodge but couldn’t persuade him to join for Fridays run!

S+C 20:00 [1]

Had to keep this fairly basic due to limited time
3 sets of Glute bridges
Side plank knee to chest
Mountain climbers

80’ Moderate

Enjoy these moderate runs. Keeping it relatively comfortable and relaxed but still moving along at a decent clip. Mostly on the pavement and a bit on the trail. Pretty flat all in all.
Right ankle still sore when rotating but no issues at all running on the flat with it.

60' easy + strideouts

Easy run from the house after work. Generally feeling pretty good; only minor issue being the right ankle. Seems fine running on it but does feel bit sore when doing ankle rotations or when touched.
6 x strideouts on the canal at the end.

60' Turbo Trainer (Moderate) Avg watt 156

Not enough time to get 2hrs in on the road bike so Watt bike it was. Started with some easy spinning before progressing into a moderate intensity. Kept seated for the whole hour. Feeling stronger on the bike than I was earlier in the year.

3hrs SE

Wasn't able to get down to Arrochar in the end for this. Plan to stop off there on my way back up from Devon towards the end of the month to at least re-recce the line off the final hill.
Instead got out in some grim lochaber weather for a good blast around the ring of steall. No visibility once up high but luckily know this route pretty well now.
Felt like a very decent run. Got out early so very quiet on the hill. Ran at just under race pace for the whole loop, getting back to lower falls in 2:13 and back to the upper car park in 2:27. Bang on the same time when I had a blast around this route last month. Continued on for another 30' on the trails to make up to 3hrs. Generally felt like i was moving quicker than last month but had a bit off faff trying to safely wade through a high river enroute.. which probably cost 2/3 mins. Had a small roll of the right ankle descending off the final hill so came down this pretty cautiously. Luckily nothing major - seems okay.
Energy levels were good; took on a gel at 20' and 40' of each hour, plus a longhaul food sachet on the hour. Felt well fuelled. Carried 500ml of water and drunk about 400 ml of this.
