long slow run 1:54:30 [3] 18.0 km (6:22 / km) +600m 5:27 / km

Jogged up and down Mt Big Ben in the Kiewa Valley. Got to the top (after almost stepping on a brown snake sunning itself on the road), to find the usual assortment of high tech towers, and no spectacular view. There was an impressive view of Mt Buffalo on the way up, however.

rode to & from work 56:00 [3] 19.0 km (2:57 / km)

Head wind all the way home was a bit tough - after a big week at work...

rode to & from work 50:00 [3] 19.0 km (2:38 / km)

Had a great tail wind on the way to work this morning! The down side of this is always the return journey - unless there's been a change in wind direction it's a head wind, and it was - that's ok, my 'training' has been non existent this week.

orienteering 1:09:06 [4] ***** 5.4 km (12:48 / km)

Victorian Long Distance Championship event - Mount Beckworth. Made two significant errors and lost 6mins on one leg and 3mins on another. Great map - steep, rocky and quite rough, with fantastic views. I should have entered a longer course - didn't feel tired enough afterwards.

orienteering race 57:38 [4] ***** 3.4 km (16:57 / km)

Victorian Middle Distance Championship event at Sailers Creek. Great area for this event. For some reason I didn't apply any logical strategies to my running. Just pointed and ran - which is ok in simple spur gully terrain, but not gold mining. Consequently I made many errors, and it was a performance I'd like to forget....

tempo session 19:00 [5] 7.85 km (2:25 / km)

3 X 5 mins plus 1 X 3 min. Tempo session with the pensioner.

warm up/down/recovery 23:17 [2]

10mins warm up, 2 mins recovery between tempos, 7mins slow jog back home. Felt good afterwards, as you do.

run 43:22 [2] 7.0 km (6:12 / km)

Just plodded tonight - lacked the energy and motivation to do any more. Tripped on a rock and landed full out in the dirt. After that just wanted to get home. Sook time

orienteering race 1:02:38 [3] 6.6 km (9:29 / km)

Today was the final of the Saturday local event series, on the Mandurang map. The forest is crispy dry, with no grass growing except where water has collected recently. I felt pretty crap today - had very little energy to run hard; only felt good on the downhill bits.

Friday Oct 13, 2006 #

rode to & from work 45:00 [3] 15.0 km (3:00 / km)

Shorter ride than usual - rode from the mechanic's garage; car needed repairs today. Head wind all the way home, on Friday evening - I just felt sooo tired.

Thursday Oct 12, 2006 #

run 27:40 [4] 5.0 km (5:32 / km)

Early morning run - took it a bit harder than usual in the morning. With 35 degrees expected today I feel more like running this morning than after work tonight.

Wednesday Oct 11, 2006 #

rode to & from work 55:00 [3] 19.0 km (2:54 / km)

A great ride this morning, avoided magpies, cool, still morning air - I could have just ridden past work and kept going....(wish).....one day....
It's always a bit harder going home, thankfully, home is mostly downhill. Much warmer and a bit of a breeze had sprung up.

Note

2 days of no proper exercise. Little sleep on Sunday night after meeting my daughter at the airport from the Australian championships. Spent Monday with her sorting stuff after a major theft while away. Today was just a work day, with no energy left for training.

orienteering 1:03:00 [3] *** 6.7 km (9:24 / km)

Ran the A course from yesterday's orienteering event. There were some nice route choice legs, and it was great to be out in the bush. I didn't much like running though, and struggled a bit to keep moving, especially up the hills.

Saturday Oct 7, 2006 #

Note

It was the local orienteering event, on the Mandurang map. We had a journalist from the local paper come to find out about orienteering, so she could do a feature article. She was more interested in the people than the sport, but her partner was much more interested in the maps and the sport, etc. I walked around the novice course with them, and we discussed orienteering. Hope to get a run in tomorrow.

run 28:56 [3] 5.0 km (5:47 / km)

Wow - two early runs in a row! Not bad going for me. I always feel a lot better at work if I've had some exercise before work.

Thursday Oct 5, 2006 #

run 29:17 [3] 5.0 km (5:51 / km)

Early morning is a great time to get out for a steady no-brain run. Now that we have light at 6am, I'm going to try and get out like this 3 times a week before daylight saving kicks in. Must - fight - the - bed - suction.

Wednesday Oct 4, 2006 #

rode to & from work 1:26:00 [3] 22.0 km (3:55 / km)

Rode to and from work today. There was a group of people to ride with, and breaky at the town hall, for 'Ride to Work Day'. I was reminded that road bikes move so much faster, more smoothly and, it seems, with much less effort than mountain bikes.
It would be fun to try a road bike sometime....

long slow run long 1:52:00 [3] 16.0 km (7:00 / km) +250m 6:30 / km

The long Sunday morning runs are much more interesting if the Pensioner and I can find somewhere different to run. Today we went to Moliagul, ran among the old gold diggings for a few km and then ran up (well, ran up most of) Mt Moliagul (it was too steep near the top). At the top we were treated with 360 degrees of lovely views of Central Victoria. Wonder where to go next week?...
We were using a useless mud map from Tyrone Thomas's Central Victoria walking guide, and had difficulty following it while running around the gold diggings. We went to the site where the Welcome Stranger nugget was found. The area could be pretty good for orienteering, because of its varied terrain - the gold diggings can be quite complex (but there are many mine shafts) and the slopes of the mountain are very rocky and tough going, with some mining detail.
