Orienteering race 1:16:23 [4]11.3 km (6:46 / km)
shoes: Saucony Triumph 3
Bashing through lupins is slow and horrible form of orienteering torture. And cruelly only course 1 went through the worst of them.

Completely stuffed up #2 which was pretty silly and annoying. Still Aaron missed it badly too (even worse I believe) so not too bad. Pretty clean for the next few, and picked a good route on the first long leg and made up nearly a minute on Aaron. Heading to the si change could see him only 30 secs in front. Then the horrible lupins Dennis picked a good line through to ctrl 11 and I could only watch, whilst crawling and falling through the nastiness, as Dennis went cruising in an easier line and grabbed the control. A few more controls of bashing, pain, leaping, and pancakes softened us up before the low vis block that Carsten mapped a couple of days ago. I took it pretty slowly and Aaron stuffed up the 2nd in this section and ended up behind me.

We ran together for the next 4 or so through the coastal strip and to the butterfly pivot. The butterfly loops were quite long and I made a couple of errors, sadly one on approaching the pivot control on the second time :-( Had to retreat to the track to relocate. Also made another bad miss in more low vis pines, so was quite pleased to finish the butterflys only about 10secs behind Aaron. Tried to sneak past with a different route choice on #30 - made up time, but made a parallel error, so Aaron caught me again.

Ran together until the next low vis where I tried to go straight and lost time in the circle and about 30secs to Aaron who took the mtb track for half the leg. Then it was back into the horrible new growth for a bash to the finish. Overall a pretty reasonable run.

Note
I was annoyed with having 4 split files for the canty champs long distance, so I've massaged the times into a single file, with only small adjustments to make me look better. See
splits here.

Pivot control was #19,24,29

Event: Canterbury champs

Orienteering race 38:14 [4]
shoes: Asics 2080
Became completely and foolishly confused on 2 controls lost about 5:30 on them, so was a little disappointing. Aaron had a clean run for the win.

Commute, 2 punctures and cold southerlies. Made legs a little weary so I won't run too eagerly and get lost tomorrow.

Orienteering 40:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 2110
Riki organised a nice little training at bottle lake. Lots of controls, direction changes, and low vis blocks all made it quite exciting. Left quad still not ready for much, so I took a nice easy pace and watched everybody head off in mysterious directions. Had one leg through some thick head-high broom which was a bit mean and something awful became lodged in my throat. It was all hairy and horrible, like a little bee. I didn't panic, of course. I kept my cool, and tried to dislodge it by screaming.

Another day of gale force winds, very handy for overtaking cars when heading out to Sumner. A cruel and unjust punishment when crawling back from Mt Pleasant. Was intending to go for a longer ride, but my quad is still horribly sore and not really functioning, so it was cut short. Need a few more days rest, replacement muscle and all that.

Orienteering race 1:40:25 [4]
shoes: Sarva
Interesting race. Started slowly with it being another long steep day. Didn't make too many mistakes over the first part of the course. And most importantly only made a small, and quickly corrected mistake heading down into the gorge. Almost everyone else seemed to do something horrible here ;-)

Picked a nice contouring route for the long leg, but sadly about half way around the hill, my shoe became detached from it's sole. Limped awkwardly back to the car on the crossover and replaced with a running shoe. Pity I didn't replace both. At the far end of the second loop, my second shoe lost it's sole whilst contouring... Ran awkwardly on it for a bit, but gave up and removed it for the last few controls.
