GMC B day 2 - 4th pair, 8th overall (does the legend that is Alec Keith count tho...)

Very cold and windy night was made better by 3 dinners, and a free beer (thanks phil).
Didn't think I was going to run until I kinda just got handed a map and that was it. Ankle was fat n very sore, and pulled a muscle behind my knee on the same leg. Also had a painful blister just all round not thriving
Tough slog up to 1 where everyone overtook us but oscar gave me food and a nice push up the hill:) good route choice to 2, but just really struggled on the terrain. The entire way to 2 was straight into the wind, and there was one point I dont think I was moving forward. They cut the course short by one control which easily took out 7-10km, so headed straight to 4 - again really good route I just couldn't get up any speed because everything hurt. Tom came past us and raced with us up the final climb to 4 but then dropped us as I couldn't pace it down the hill. 5-6 was another slog, taking the path the longer way round would probably have been quicker, but not even to catch up with Tom. Orienteering was paths all round which was good, and Andrew nailed the controls (I was just dead weight lol). Jenny and Susan absolutely smashed both days and beat us 50 mins, Tom and Alasdair only gained 20 minutes on us however.
Just pleased I got round this, hopefully everything is superficial and recovers quickly.
Turns out it's the last time I'm seeing Tom as he's moving back to NZ so it was great to race against him one last time.

GMC B day 1
Pretty disappointed with how my body reacted to this, I think the stress of last week (interviews etc) really caught up with me and I just didn't have much left in me.
The orienteering was fairly straight forward, not that i helped much, and had a very clean run until no.6 where we both just got a bit confused - Tom (a MM friend who I've run against countless times) and partner caught us up at this point, but they only started 2 minutes behind us. Route to 1 seemed simple but the ground was rougher than anticipated and we would have benefitted running more of it through a patch of forest, nailed the nav however. No2 was causing chaos throughout everyone, and we only saw Tom hit it straight on. People everywhere, looking around, running the wrong way... quite amusing.
Lost a few minutes but nothing major.
Sped along to no3, took a different route from Tom but hit the control at the same time despite their head start out of two. Asthma attack on route for no reason other than maybe the wind? first point i realised i was really not thriving. Weather really took a turn and I swapped jackets because I was so soaked through. Wind had also picked up at this point.
Down to 4 was a pain, and got dropped drastically along the track, I started to give up at the manned checkpoint but we then overtook a team so that gave me a little boost. Climb back up to 5 was easy but grim and I sat down in tears... vision kept going and I just couldn't hold a straight line. If we were going to stop this was the last point we could and it seriously went through my mind. First time I've ever come so close to pulling out mid race. Carried on, 5 and 6 were a slog and the wind knocked me over at one point. Even Andrew started to dip at this point despite his high spirits. Dropped Tom and co - who stops to put layers on? but we were pacing it neck and neck up to 7 with them, along with another pair. Lead both pairs down into 7 and then it was just a manic race to see if we could gain two minutes to beat them. Busted my ankle coming down into the valley, but just ran through it (desperate just to finish tbh), thought we had it but they came powering past in the last 200m. Put in a push but just couldn't gain on them.
All in all a very clean day, full kudos to Andrew, I didn't even have my map for the second half, but it was just a case of getting me round rather than racing it unfortunately.
