orienteering (WIOL #6) 1:16:59 [2] *** 3.3 mi (23:20 / mi) +212m 19:27 / mi
23c shoes: Altra Lone peak 5

Walked but aggressively and recklessly. Taped.
start-1 - Freeballed, got a feel for how things and vegetation and stuff looked
2-3 - See so I didn't want to go all the way off-trail for this entire steep section, but I also didn't want to take all the windy distance from the trail, so I just kinda did both and free balled. Went off the trail at some point and just like looked at the lay of the land and what I thought was maybe the spur that 3 was on - spoiler alert it was in fact the spur
3-4 - left the trail at a known spot but was a little silly and contoured S of 4 rather than N of 4 while thinking that I was contouring N of 4, so while I was looking in front of and to the right of me, it was really actually sitting to the left of me. Cheap control cuz I kinda got help from seeing people
4-5 - Again did a combo of offtrail and on trail because all of either was a bad option for my skillset. Worked well, knew I was going to hit the major trail E of 5.
5-6 - (Tied shoe after punching 5) I don't know why I went and curved N. Don't ask me why. I think I thought I wanted to avoid dropping down into the depression but dude it just wouldn't have been that bad and like the trail was right there just directly E and I could've just hit it and it would've been chill. But alas.
6-7 - This leg made me happy because it was just tromping throught the forest with half a sense of direction and a dream
7-8 - Had another opportunity to cut corners by going offtrail so I took it.
8-9 - Goofed when I decided to use my wonky compass to tell me which trail to take rather than my eyeballs and my map. started heading back NE to main trail before realizing.
9-10 - decided to get on the lower trail immediately out of 9 because I figured I would probably spend some time hesitating trying to find the other trail opening off of the field. Regardless wasn't much of a difference.
10-11 - Liked my route. Proud of this one. Saw someone else exiting back out N but I was like no other way better way, I can handle the S entry. Turns out the vegetation was way open so like anyone could've handled it but like even if it hadn't been crazy open I would've been epic and thrashed through the stuff.
12-13 - A slay.
13-14 - Thought it would be more fun to go off trail a straightline. I was right. It slayed. And I slayed.
15-16 - Went on the right path bc i guess it took the slope at a diagonal and also brought me to a trail spot where there was pretty much a direct line to 16, as opposed to the left path which would've brought me to a zig-zaggy path that would've forced me to offtrail and would also leave me with less of a sense of where to jump off to get the actual control. Went approach from E, I saw the water feature SE of the control and used it to gage my distance because I have no concept of distance. Scale who?
18-19 - Fav part of race by far. Tip: don't grab devil's club.
23 - Almost walked right past it. Kinda awk. Don't do that.
11 PM

Note

Tendon feeling slay. Did a funny little jog waddle for a quarter mile after the race to grab something my mom forgot, and it felt fine. Big thumbs up
