http://rg.cascadeoc.org/rg2/#354&course=17&...Full circle momentstart-1 - I don’t even want to talk about it and pardon my negative self talk but man do you even look at the map??? I kept on the lower trail thinking it was doing what the upper trail was doing, and after going down it a bit I realized it did NOT in fact do that, so I clambered over a little ledge of dirt and veg to the other trail, and at this point I didn’t know where I w a s on the trail. Do you see the problem? Long story short I jumped off too S and was trying to read the contour details but couldn’t glean anything from them, and just knew I was very likely too far S so went N and found it, given how narrow the veg corridor was.
-2 - Okay actually I’d talk about 1 all day if it meant I didn’t have to talk about 2. This was a big silly moment for me. So once I launched off the trail, I was going parallel about 20m SW and my silly little brain that has NEVER bothered to get comfortable with scale and contour sizes decided that the knoll SW of 2 was that contour circle NWW of 2. Okay bud. Nice going. So I wandered a bit after cutting right below 2 and doing a little loop, stood still for a minute, and then, in record time (for me, mind you), chose to just bail out to the trail SW and recover. Then the contours clicked and I negative-self-talked myself to the control.
-3 - Took my sweet time meandering towards the trail - why cut over when you can just trip over fallen trees? Then trailed until I saw the boulder over W and cut over and encountered a cute little reentrant. I love contours :))))) Reading the terrain makes me so happy. If only I could’ve done that at 2…
-4 - Took a bearing, hit the post right off the trail, continued on bearing and voila - big rock. Yeah, she can stay on a bearing if it’s 100m or less. No autographs please
-5 - Hit trail, go N until veg clear, aim at river and go, get assisted by elephant trail and pink flags, roughest bearing you ever did see to get me to big trail, follow trail briefly then just cut towards vegetation boundary while aiming to hit at or just N of control
-6 - Pushed myself to focus on the circle and recognize where exactly the control was located around the thickets #efficiency
-7 - Stroll under ye old crackling pipelines, then tried to be cool in the circle but I ended up just making myself walk on top of a blackberry bush. My b
-8 - Said hello to Tane, saw a big rock. I was actually anticipation it being closer to the veg boundary cuz I didn’t pay too much attention to the circle given its simplicity, and it didn’t end up costing me cuz it was close e n o u g h to the boundary, but just something to keep in mind in the future: always beneficial to see the circle, no matter how simple it seems
-9 - We do a bit of funneling
-10 - Cool fricken tree dude. Honestly I did not care where the control was, my priority was passing by the cool tree. Luckily the control was on the other side. Honestly didn’t even notice there was a trail going E up the hillside that brought you right to the control cuz I was so entranced by the tree.
-11-finish - Walky walking walk
