Rogaining 5:32:00 [1] 11.5 km (28:52 / km)

Set the streamer-O (O-athlon) courses at Nisene Marks. Much slower than I expected; about 1.5 km/hour of streamering, which included two loops checking features around until they made sense (or didn't). Had to punt on the Intermediate loop and the penalty controls. Then had to punt on the Short shortcut, which Thorsten gracefully offered to complete as I got back to the start just after 10 (he subsequently got lost putting out the streamers, too). Then ran the 4.22 km down to the registration/White/Yellow start. Found out that Syd placed the Yellow bags I had no time for last night.

Easy running 34:51 [2] 4.8 km (7:16 / km)

Up the mountain, back to the advanced start/finish. Got there in time before the first finisher.

Note

The people didn't like the streamer-O as they kept losing track of the streamers as they ran harder. The longer course people said there were completely streamer-less portions of the course. I though I really didn't know what I was doing, and that streamers should be about 5 m apart instead of 10-15 m I hung them.

Running with weights 15:04 [2] 2.5 km (6:02 / km)

Running with weights 33:53 [3] 5.0 km (6:47 / km)

From Nisene Marks park entrance to Porter Family picnic area. With about 20 kg of event stuff.

Note

Did not attackpoint the White/Yellow course setup (59 minutes), as about a third of that was spent hiding from the ranger (who was patrolling the park road, probably because the park's neighbors called in about the light) with the light off. This was not a good park for night-O even with the light. Same for night-O-setup.
Four controls on Yellow ended up not placed. I left them on a bench by the next day's registration, hoping someone would find them and place them, or that I would actually have time to put the advance course streamers on Saturday morning and get down before the start.

Note

Walked up to the advanced course start/finish (4.22 km/190 m, with now about 15 kg, about 55 minutes) and camped there. (It was so far away to get out of most of the PO, and to orienteer in a previously-unused area.) Saw a Buddha while pumping water through a filter from Aptos Creek. I thought that there was no point in trying to set the streamers in the dark, the park being what it was. It turned out the next day that I was right as I (and everyone) had problems navigating in broad daylight (well, as broad as it gets in the redwoods).
