Warmup 10:30 [1] 0.8 km (13:07 / km)

Stretching was 6'00.

Orienteering 1:01:51 [3] 8.0 km (7:44 / km) +195m 6:53 / km
ahr:159 max:168 spiked:11/14c

LAOC Mt. Piños, Red. Quite clean. Maybe I've finally figured out the map, after 6 tries. I compared the time with my cleanest run at the site so far, June 1999 A meet Day 2. After errors, length, and climb differences taken out, I concluded I was about 3.5 min per hour faster in 2002 (the 1999 run was fresh—I DNF'd Day 1). I'm happy.

Running with weights 6:03 [3] 1.2 km (5:02 / km)

To meet Hannu at Lawrence Expwy.

Warmup 4:11 [1] 0.4 km (10:27 / km)

Stretching was 1'00.

Orienteering 1:15:18 [3] 8.5 km (8:52 / km) +280m 7:36 / km
ahr:160 max:171 spiked:10/13c

LAOC B meet at Mt. Piños. Red. I experienced a significant loss of concentration for the first two controls—was it the lack of sleep, the altitude, or both? After that it went OK; knowing the particular places where the map was flaky in advance helped a lot. Still, I made a 6-min error in the middle; one of the mappers made a similar error (but recovered much quicker), that should say something.

Orienteering 47:13 [3] 5.7 km (8:17 / km) +140m 7:23 / km
ahr:156 max:164 spiked:7/9c

LAOC Mt. PiñosGreen. Almost clean, slow.

Easy running 9:23 [2] 2.0 km (4:42 / km)
ahr:150 max:164

Warmup at De Anza. Alone.

Warmup 4:35 [1] 0.3 km (15:17 / km)
ahr:107 max:153

Stretching and one stride.

Race pace running 18:31 [5] 5.0 km (3:42 / km)
ahr:174 max:183

I ran a 5K on the track at De Anza. I had been planning to run a race on Monday September 2; it was the only day in the fall weekend schedule free of other orienteering and running activities. I entered a 5K in Davis. I decided against going on Sunday because the $50 for the train and $50 for the hotel didn't seem too exciting (them extended European trips do have a downside). Steve Gregg went in my place and ran an 18:18 (as "Vladimir Gusiatnikov"). I guess I owe him 13 seconds (works out to $1.92 per second).
I was quite disappointed about today's outcome (1:43 behind the PR and about the same as 1999; certainly faster than 2000 and 2001 but that doesn't say much). It did not feel hard and I was not tired. Rather, I just settled into 90's pace and did not seem to have a faster gear.

Short intervals 19:53 [4] 4.0 km (4:58 / km)
ahr:154 max:169

10×200 with 200 m rest, following the 5 km. 38.5 40.3 40.2 39.1 38.8 38.0 39.3 37.6 37.8 39.1.
The track was empty tonight.

Note

I did not go running today.

Monday Sep 2, 2002 #

Easy running 24:18 [2] 5.1 km (4:46 / km)
ahr:144 max:168

Baylands, after dark. Some birds.

Note

Was looking through the office in search for the source of a funny smell. I found about 0.5 kg of cheese molding away underneath the false bottom of my travel bag (the cheap ones, they acquire a false bottom after a while). I've been breathing the stuff for at least a month; it explains the source of Thursday's and today's headaches better than too much training. Hope there aren't little glioblastomas sprouting around.
