Warmup 8:00 [2] 0.5 km (16:00 / km)

Was a bit late for the event; got into Burlington after midnight and just crashed there. Walked to downtown Burlington in the morning—just over an hour. Took Vermont Trailways to Montpelier. Called Eric and Bruce at the motel to find out they had just left. But the route to the event went through the bus stop, so I spotted some orienteers (DVOA Hungarian gang) in less than 20 minutes.

GMOC A meet. The highlight of the race for me was the extremely high HR. I haven't had such readings since early 1998; I was less than 4% off my max HR for most of the race. I'm not quite sure what to make of this, as I was thinking quite clearly for all of the race despite the high HR, and the run did not seem like much of an effort but the end result was very good. My best guess is that I am getting into a really good shape, so that lactic acid metabolism can go on successfully at a high speed. However, the tiredness of last week's rogaine did not allow me to move as fast as the HR would suggest. I held back a few times when the monitor was beeping out max–1. The HR was also affected by the high temperatures and humidity, yielding a higher reading for a given effort.
The race was slow moving at a high effort—forced myself to do much more map reading than I'm used to, since there wasn't much else to occupy my time with for the slow-going run.

US Rogaine Champs, east loop. Got them all—it was actually in doubt until Eric switched gears at 6 am.
I included water stop/taping time but not the HH time. Eric has the net going time in his entry.
