Long intervals (Course setting) 30:40 [4] 2.3 km (13:20 / km) +320m 7:52 / km

Spent a full day in the woods, putting out controls and water. Only logged the part of the day that I was actually running:

Test-ran 5 of the Golden Goat legs. All of those were with ample rest, sometimes several-hour breaks. Made a boo-boo running Control 2 to Control 3 backwards.

Note

Another abysmal week. Yuck. Maybe I shoud just give up on this marathon plan.

Easy running 42:04 [2] 7.6 km (5:32 / km) +28m 5:26 / km

Lawrence. Not one but two drivers tried to kill me, one of them driving on the sidewalk. The other one almost succeeded, taking the 101 exit at freeway speed, no turn signal; fortunately I had a chance to stop quickly and get out of his way.

Running with weights 17:12 [2] 2.9 km (5:56 / km) +9m 5:50 / km

Ran to Tasman and Calle del Sol after missing the early light rail.

Easy running (Course setting) 1:49:20 [2] 8.4 km (13:01 / km) +640m 9:26 / km

For the first time since February, went out to check points and test-run legs for the Golden Goat coming in five days. Saw tons of shady mapping, and A RATTLESNAKE.

(I walked after where the purple line ends, and did not log this time, the rest of the "course"; neither did I log the time spent looking around the control sites and doing some limited mapping.) The total mapping time was just under 3 hours, and the drafting took just over two hours this evening.

I was obviously not 100% recovered from the ultra run, so ran at the easy intensity (or lower)—need to make sure to adjust the test-rin splits down about 20% for realistic projections of the winning train speed.

Running with weights 24:15 [1] 4.0 km (6:04 / km)

Shuffled from New Almaden post office (got water at the museum) to Harry and Grandview for the bus.

Note

Ended up moving the first control from where I stuck the vetting flag, just E to the colossal reentrant junction. I spent some time looking at the aerial photo trying to figure out if where I had stuck the flag was the mapped clearing, or not. Could not tell squat from the aerial photo. Concluded that it was not a well-vetted location; also, It would have been a hell of a mob scene with all those people on the steep spur, the place I had originally selected.

Note

The bees were reclassified by Wendell as yellow jackets. The stuff almost doesn't hurt anymore, just itches.

Rogaining 1:26:59 [1] 6.1 km (14:16 / km) +375m 10:54 / km
ahr:120 max:145

Shadowed Brad Wetmore on the Green course at the BAOC event at China Camp. A nice recovery pace. I wouldn't have been able to do a competitive course in this state.
