Orienteering (Course setting) 19:36 [2] ** 2.83 km (6:56 / km) +70m 6:10 / km
ahr:142 max:163 shoes: (C)Ross Dress Brooks

Late in the morning (wanted to minimize control walk-off, but also was a bit hung over) went to set the Sprint course at Golden Gate Park. I walked to place the first/last five controls, then ran to put out the rest (this session). Managed to place all stands before the first starter caught up with me. The homeless camped at Control 9 seemed alert and friendly enough—they had a really nice tent, too, and were devouring their breakfast!—that I didn't offer the pastries I had bought, or dollar bills.

Having noticed that people were crossing a forbidden area during the event, and that (surprise) a piece of an impassable fence shown around it was missing and there was a trail right through it to Control 6, I ran out to place some streamers.

All controls stayed put. The course turned out too tricky and a touch too long. Many people had a problem with the line from #5 broken and a line to #9 going in the same direction—they thought Control 9 was instead #6. Many got trapped in the impassable green around the overpass. There are certainly better ways to show the overpass, but common sense should have told them there's no easy way down once you are on top of a bridge.

Note

Didn't go to the evening orienteering. Slept instead, and then went drinking.

Note

For the first time in a long while, my log hyperlinks mostly seem to resolve to something meaningful.

Note

Started to feel like crap today. Emotionally exhausted, uptight, irritated. (More than usual! you.)

Note

Went and vetted the Sprint today for the event on 05 August. There are some encampments near controls, so I should probably bring cake and some dollar bills when I go place the bags on Saturday morning.

Easy running warm up/down 24:18 [2] 3.97 km (6:07 / km) +66m 5:39 / km

Home to Kezar. Hurting a lot.

Medium pace running tempo 11:30 [3] 3.0 km (3:50 / km)

Mikkel showed up, and we decided on something easy and continuous, like 3000 m at T to start with. Somewhere around the end of the first km, the very inside of the right quad started to feel like it was pulled. I let off the pace a bit, it felt better. Then towards the start of the third km, I felt it again. Clearly no further activity for the day seemed beneficial, and what I just did was most likely of questionable use.

Mikkel ran about 5 s faster. I spent the rest of the evening discussing my new volunteer trail-running-coach position with the Golden Gate Triathlon Club.

Easy running race 41:52 [2] 6.1 km (6:52 / km) +150m 6:07 / km
ahr:138 max:155 shoes: (C)Ross Dress Brooks

I started 1 hour 10 min late, and ran largely by myself. The course changed a bit from last year, but retained the multiple crossings of San Lorenzo River. So, I brought two pairs of shoes; one for each side. I ended up only changing shoes twice, not four times, to save the time, trading off for some wet-feet trotting. I logged the three sets of shoes separately. This run is to the first crossing.

I stashed the shoes at the river, along with the bladder—since they only had a single aid station this year.

Easy running race 3:26:41 [2] 28.8 km (7:11 / km) +1010m 6:06 / km
ahr:144 max:160 shoes: Rogaine Asics

This part is from the first crossing to the third one.

I felt great during all of the race. The best I felt during a 50 km in a long while, possibly ever. Of course, the slow pace and ample rest during crossings and at the start/finish turnaround were partly the reasons... but I also felt very strong, able to tackle the uphills at any pace reasonably necessary.

Easy running race 1:58:43 [2] 15.3 km (7:46 / km) +610m 6:28 / km
ahr:150 max:163 shoes: (C)Ross Dress Brooks

Not even close to cramping, no wobbly legs just before and after the finish like at Angel Island...

Total aid station and river crossing time: 26:14. For splits, see the race archive. Ended up 11th, didn't care much about the place.
