Medium pace running race 5:00:59 [3]50.6 km (5:57 / km) +1240m 5:18 / km

Ran the Angel Island 50 km. It was a foggy day; the sun showed up briefly at the beginning of the sixth loop, but then went away.

Beforehand, I had thought about running this one competitively, but then reconsidered, given the Vermont 100 coming up. So, I planned instead to go for the par—5 hours—and maybe beating my course PR. Something like 50' 45' 50'; 50' 50' 55' for the six loops.

I kept up with last year's pace, except for the fifth loop. Was alone for the last three loops (got passed by two early on the third loop). Except, Rick Gaston from the Golden Gate Tri Club caught up with me in the beginning of the fourth loop (he had started really slowly), and we maintained a nice pace. Just as I had to let him go, my pace disintegrated... after working it on the third and fourth loops, the fifth loop really did suck—which cost me the five hours, and a PR: 49' 45' 48'; 51' 52' 56'.

Unlike last year, I felt strong throughout the run, and had no cramps and no weakly feeling after the finish. Aid station time: 4:41.
