Medium pace running tempo (Threshold intervals) 46:03 [3] 6.02 mi (7:39 / mi) +48m 7:28 / mi
ahr:164 max:186 shoes: Wave Riders

In the morning/early afternoon, ran on a treadmill at the Palo Alto Y; Lani ran on a neighboring treadmill. Had planned some kind of T activity, and it worked out to be 10 minutes at E (= 7.1 mi/hr) and then 10, 6, 4 minutes at T ( =9.2 mi/hr) with 2 minutes E rest in-between, and finally a cooldown at 6.3 mi/hr. I think that 9.2 (= 6:31/mi) was too fast for a T, I should have picked something like 6:40. The HR got really high and I felt lightheaded, so couldn't even complete the second 10-minute interval, had to split it up. The lightheadedness may have been due to no air movement inside the exercise room, more specifically because I got unused to that particular environment, having not done treadmill for a couple years.

Tried out the Wave Riders. Initial verdict: these may be the sweetest shoes I worn evar, besting the late-1990s Asics DS Trainers. I'm so glad I looked at both the Wave Riders and the Insipres at the Sports Basement, and had a chance to compare. Initially, before the trip to the store, I had picked the Inspires, but they are too hard/inflexible and have too much of that stability thing being in, despite being light. The Wave Riders just seem like a natural extension of the foot, and a cushy one at that.

There was a curious MBZ with a WS100 license plate frame in the parking lot, but I didn't see any of the ultrarunners inside.

Easy running 52:20 [2] 9.87 km (5:18 / km) +89m 5:04 / km
ahr:146 max:160 shoes: North Faces

Just before New Year, ran in the industrial terrain of Palo Alto, on mostly deserted four-lane streets that went through campuses of the likes of HP and Lockheed Martin.

The goal of the run, besides making sure I stay awake through the party, was to try out the Betassos. Initial verdict: clunkers not good for much more than snow running. Lightweight, check. And some noticeable support. But the cusioning felt awkward at best; they seemed similar overall to the Flyrocs 310. Same minimal usability off road, light, inflexible, and really hard on pavement.
