Miscellaneous (Kitesurfing ) 1:30:00 [1]

Pre-rogaine blast. 18-20 knots. Perfect!!!

Orienteering (Upside Down Rogaine) 4:00:00 [3]

Super happy with the flow of our planned route to get 46 out of 56 possible controls. Headed west on the road first and miscalculated distance to “watercourse” so went 500 m up wrong gully. Exited and retraced the bearing and pace-count with more care, which doesn’t help much when you are in the wrong gully!!!! Shitty start. Didn’t realize the mistake until long after we abandoned the search for #30. Quickly recovered with bang-on navigation for the next 7 controls. Then got super distracted around #90 when we descended upon about 5 teams wandering around on the spur. I’m terrible around others. Ended up abandoning the madness but apparently (according to one of the teams we were near) we turned around just meters before the control. We should have trusted ourselves....that’s the lesson we took into the rest of the night.

The next 20 controls were flawless and at 4 am we found ourselves still on track with our estimated time. Then we hit the part of the map with the worst parrot bush ever. It slowed us to a crawl, especially with our bare legs that had already been shredded raw. Parrot bush on raw flesh = misery. The 6 ft coverage also obscured sight lines so despite the sun coming up, we couldn’t see any better than in the night. We had to make a route change at 5 am to start heading back via the biggest point controls but things started to fall apart. Andre calls it a Rogaine certainity - the imminent 5 am disaster. We couldn’t find #100 in a “very broad (parrot bush covered) gully” and had no way to reorient so had to retrace our bearing back through the shite. That was disappointing, for sure. Returned to control 80 in order to find 84, then picked up one more on the road by the finish with the extra time we had. Finished with 9 minutes to spare.

Overall a great race, considering neither of us are in race shape. Covered about 48 km I think. Those 220 points we abandoned on route would have gained us at least one place in the overall standings, which is a bit of a bummer.
