Orienteering 34:31 [3] ** 3.35 km (10:18 / km)

Proud moment. I started off with intentions of going to a certain spot at PLRA, but ended up going in a different direction. I was able to run a certain point Until I got to a familiar place. Pulled out my map. SOFA and got back on track and eventually to where I wanted to be!

Orienteering (PLRA - Virtual O (White)) 1:23:00 [2] 7.5 km (11:04 / km)
shoes: ASICS Men's Gel-Venture 7 Trai

Tried out the white virtual course again. Plan was to practice pace and distance measurements and familiarize myself with features.

I had the map turned the wrong way between CP 2-3 and lost about 15 mins and had to backtrack. Through CP7, I did ok and worked on my training. For 100 m it’s about 65-70 paces.

Then CP 8 came up and I had the map turned the wrong way once again and got way off track! I should’ve checked the app for help but I tried to use the map and I wasn’t where I thought I was on the map and got really lost. I knew that where I needed to go was North, so I ended up using my compass and the app for help and got back on track, but I lost about an 45 mins! I was pretty upset that I got that lost and mixed up. I thought I was further along in my skills than what I actually am and it’s pretty disappointing. But I will just keep trying and practicing.

Orienteering 26:37 [1] 2.2 km (12:06 / km)

Practiced virtual o course - beginner course. Started out disoriented. I couldn’t figure out how to get to the start location!

I thought I knew where I was on the map but in actuality the terrain looked different to me. I started going straight until I found out where I was on the map and then backtracked to where I needed to start.

What I should’ve done was orient the map and I would’ve found out is that I was facing south and needed to head west. Then I could’ve taken the trail in that direction.

I eventually got to the starting point, but was running out of day light. I knew the course was short and that I would run back into where I started, so I decided to go for it.

The UsynligO app allowed me to track distance from CP so I used that to practice measuring distance and measuring pace. Found out my 100 m pace is around 60-70 steps depending on terrain.

I wasn’t too worried about finding the CPs because I knew I followed the trail, I would run into the CPs.

The other thing I tried to practice was understanding the terrain and matching what I saw on the map and what the terrain actually was.
