1st time hitting this course. Had a blast. Crashed a couple of times and chain came off once but other than that it was pretty smooth.

Note

Navigator's Notebook:‌
During your field work, list the features you identified in each category:

Landforms - shallow reentrant, pits, depressions, saddles, hills

Point features - Trail junctions, houses

Linear features - trails, roads, marsh, Contours

Area features - Marsh, thick vegetation
What method did you use to orient your map, and how did it work for you?
I kept my map oriented with my compass and made sure to check frequently, if I lost my direction, I knew something was wrong, or I overshot my attackpoint and headed back. This helped out so I didn’t lose too much time, but still frustrating when it happens!

How did you use your compass during your field work? Were you able to set it to follow a bearing? Yes. I tried it a couple times

How accurate were you?‌ worked out well. I was able to keep my direction in line to the the CP and ended up finding it pretty quick, versus walking to an area where I thought it was and roaming around until I spotted it. And then I took another bearing to get back on a trail but I failed to look at the map and took myself right into some thick bushes. I survived!

First time out during winter conditions. Started out on Cross Rd and the plan was to find R9 and O5 and then see how much daylight I had left.

The terrain definitely looked different without leaves and seeing snow on the ground versus what I’m used to seeing.

For R9, I followed the trail and my plan was to use the junction as my attackpoint but I overshot it and ended up on the other trail and was heading west, so I turned around and headed back. I realized my mistake was that I didn’t realize I was at the junction because I didn’t see the beginning of the junction and thought I was on the same trail. A couple problemS with this... 1) I should’ve used the man made features (houses) on the map as my attackpoint, I saw them and looked on the map and knew I was close but I kept going. I should’ve stopped and started to close in on the CP. 2) I should’ve known I was at the trail junction when I made a hard left on the trail, but for some reason I kept walking...lack of concentration! I ended up finding my way and eventually found the CP, but it took me too long and wasted daylight.

Next I went for O5, I got back on the trail and headed west. Again the plan was to follow the trail and use the switchback as my attackpoint. Once I got to the switchback, I’d say this was my biggest win, I tried to Actually use my compass and take a bearing and it worked! I was able to stay in line and went from point to point until I got to wear I thought would be pretty close to the CP and found it fairly quick.

Now the plan was to get back to the car before I ran out of daylight. I saw on the map that if I went SE from O5, I’d run into the trail that would take me right back to Cross Rd. Took another bearing and started my way. Ran into another problem. I failed to look at the map to notice that I was headed right into a thick heavy green area and I ended up getting caught up in a bunch of bushes. So I rerouted NE and hit another trail. I should’ve headed south and I would've gotten on the trail I originally intended for but I was so happy to get out of that thick stuff and knew where I was at, I just headed back to where I was comfortable because I was afraid I was going to run out of daylight. I should’ve relaxed and checked the map. So I went the long way back to my car and added about 10-15 mins to my return.

Again, I made some progress, I took a bearing for the first time and I was able to follow the features fairly well, but also made some of the same mistakes I’ve made in the past due to lack of concentration. Need to figure out how to get past this and stay focused!
