| Orienteering race 48:55 [4]*** 4.5 km (10:52 / km) | ||
| spiked:4/11c shoes: Vasque Lightspeed | ||
| I ran in the 25th Annual "Bog Slog" at St. Edward State Park. Unfortunately, I was really sick for the days leading up to the race, and I performed poorly. Several people who never beat me finished ahead of me.
I did really well through the first 3 controls, but the giant climb between #3 and #5 killed me. I have no idea how long those two legs took me, but I had to walk up the hill. I was gasping for air. It was pathetic. After that, my brain turned to mush. I turned on the wrong trail halfway to #6 (lost 30 seconds). I decided to head straight through the bog to #7, which was fine, until I turned the wrong way when I got to the trail on the other side (lost 2 minutes). And then I got tired running to #8, and I turned into a clearing too early (lost 30 seconds). My brain didn't want to think, so I took super-easy handrails from #8 to #9 and #9 to #10. And then, to top it off, I zoned out on the long run in and missed my road junction (lost another 30 seconds). I probably made 5 minutes of mistakes out there, all total. But even considering that, I was out there for 44 minutes, which is still waaay slower than I normal. Looking at the map and my route, it all seems fuzzy to me, like I experienced lost time or something. Maybe I was abducted? Oh, on a positive note, I wore my new "orienteering" shoes for the first time. And I took them right through a muddy bog!

| Mapping/Designing/Setting 2:00:00 [2]*** | ||
| Ugh.... two hours is not enough time to set 43 e-punch controls on campus. Don told me to get there at 7:30am, which was waaaaaay too late. I hung the last control just 6 minutes before the race. All controls were hung in the right spot, though, so that was good. | ||

| Mapping/Designing/Setting 1:00:00 [2]*** | ||
| Picked up 1/3 of the controls, which were on the western part of the map. | ||
| Mapping/Designing/Setting 31:27 [4]*** 4.8 km (6:33 / km) | ||
| I ran my own course #7, just to see how I'd compare with everyone, knowing the exact locations of everything. I spiked everything, maximising every route choice possible, save for one 5-second mistake, when I caught myself leaving a control away from the most optimal route.
Eric *still* beat me, by a whopping 82 seconds, and he made 90 seconds worth of mistakes. It just goes to show you how much fitter he is that me. (One other guy beat me by 2 seconds, too... I don't know who that was...)

| Mapping/Designing/Setting 1:00:00 [2]*** | ||
| One last hour on UW campus while checking a few controls for description sheet purposes. Seattle got hit with a pretty mean wind storm that night, so campus was dead, the trees were creaking, branches and pine needles were falling all over.... (4 big trees fell over that night on campus, 2 of which made accessing the controls trickier, and the other two blocking the worst of 3 possible route choices from 15 to 16. | ||
Sunday Dec 10 | ||
| Mapping/Designing/Setting 46:00 [4]*** | ||
| I spent a total of 3.5 hours on campus yesterday, 46 minutes of which was on the stopwatch, comparing route choices. I ran all of these with a good honest effort, and because I got to rest in between, I probably ran each of these faster than I would have running the entire thing. | ||
| Mapping/Designing/Setting 2:45:00 [1]*** | ||
| In addition from running route options, I had to walk back each route a few times, too, plus write down my times on my sheet and generally just scope out minor changes to my advanced course. | ||
Saturday Dec 9 | ||
| Street Scramble race 1:30:00 [4]** 7.0 mi (12:50 / mi) | ||
| Things weren't going my way for a good race, so I cut it short. Because I volunteered with registration, I had to get up a lot earlier, which meant that I missed breakfast and didn't get to stretch adequately.
It was raining out there and it was slippery, and I fell on a manhole cover. Also, my question/answer sheet disintegrated, which meant that 5 miles in, I didn't know what I was looking for, so I just headed back. [Note: there is another question/answer sheet on the back of the map, which is in a map case. I guess I just forgot that it was there. When I run with Nick, that's what he reads off of, because I always have the Q&A sheet. So, I guess subconsciously, a wet, clumpy Q&A sheet was another reason to head in early.] I also made three sizeable mistakes, which is unlike me. I was severely confused for about 5 minutes because I was running around a park two blocks too far east. This was just after I fell, so I lost focus to where I was. Despite the rain, I did have a good time for the first hour or so. My most memorable moment was when I performed my own Mentos commercial. One of the checkpoints was on the second floor of a shopping center, and just as I got to the escalator, an elderly couple just got on, and they wouldn't budge. So, spying the empty down escalator to my left, I just turned around, ran down a few steps of the up escalator, and huffed it up the down escalator. When I reached the top, the old folks still had 1/3 of the way to go! So, it only saved me 10 seconds, but it was fun.
| Mapping/Designing/Setting 2:30:00 [1]*** | ||
| Met Don on campus and we talked about map revisions and courses, etc. I scoped out a few control locations I hadn't visited in person yet, and I moved a few locations slightly. I made the #8 to #9 leg a lot more interesting without sacrifcing the legs before and after.
Unfortunately, one of my "soft" traps isn't much a trap after all, as there's a break in the fence and a new sidewalk there. Also, Don suggested that I use a certain thicket as a control location, instead of the corner of the building 50m away. However, when I scoped it out, that thicket is a homeless person's den. I wonder how many of the UW students realize that there's someone living there.. less than 50m away.

| Note | ||
| I managed to finish designing my courses, which is great. I've probably spent waaaay too much time working on this the last two weeks (40 hours maybe). I've been overanalyzing everything. Plus, it's not easy to set 7 courses with varying degrees of difficulty, while:
a) not using a control for more than 3 courses, and b) planting so many controls out there that it's just absurd and confusing. c) not having too many similar controls and legs as the 2004 and 2003 meets. I have 7 pretty decent courses, and I'll test run them this weekend. There is one leg on the advanced course that I'm not too smitten with. I really like all of the other ones, but one of them is just a pretty uninteresting loooong leg. It sets up a great short leg, it avoids the revegetation and construction areas, and it's not bad, but it's just not... well, interesting. I've got long legs and super short legs, lots of decisions, some tricky controls and some "soft traps" as Eric calls them.

| Note | ||
| I had my first course-designing nightmare last night. (I've had orienteering dreams before, quite frequently, actually.) Anyway, I'm working on designing seven (!) courses for the COC meet in 10 days. I've spent soooo much time on them over the past week, that's it's driving me nuts.
In my dream, I was inside the map, and all of my red circles and lines were disappearing, and new features started sprouting all over the place. It was becoming overwhelmingly complicated and frustrating!

| Basketball 32:00 [4] | ||
| BEEBA Fall League Tournament
Loss, 41-40. We choked. Choked, choked, choked. We were up by 12 points going into the 4th quarter, and we only scored 2 points in the period. The other team made 2 free throws with 5 seconds left to win. End of 1st: 15-7 End of 2nd: 27-19 End of 3rd: 38-26 End of 4th: 40-41 I played my best all-around game of the season. I was rebounding well (more than I can count), I played great defense, I blocked a shot, I had two assists, I shot well (11 points), and I made all of my free throws, including 2 clutch ones to regain the lead with 30 seconds left. But, I'm also the "goat". We had a 1-point lead with 20 seconds to go, and I got the rebound, and I called timeout so that they wouldn't steal it from me. On the inbounds, we broke the press, and I had the ball in the front court. Instead of trying to pass the ball to Tim, I wanted to hold onto the ball to milk some time and draw the foul. But the defender came from behind and knocked the ball out of bounds. The ref made (another) poor call, and gave the ball to them. On their next possession, we foul them with 5 seconds to go. End of story. I'm also the goat because at the start of their 12-point run in the 4th quarter, I got a technical foul called on me after I yelled at the ref on a poor traveling call on Eric. They made one of two free throws, which was the difference. One of the two refs is the best in the league. He's really good. However, the other one is the worst. He's atrocious. He's a drama queen. Again, I need to be in the game more often. I played the entire 1st quarter, and we were +8. I sat out the entire 2nd quarter, and we were +0. I played the entire 3rd quarter, and we were +4. I sat out the first 5 minutes of the 4th quarter, and we were -12. I played the last 3 minutes, and we were -1. With me, we were +11, without me, we were -12. (Ugh... I don't like sounding so full of myself here... I don't want to say it in front of my teammates, so I just say it on AP where only 2 people read it.)

| Mapping/Designing/Setting 2:00:00 [1]*** | ||
| I checked out a lot more of campus this afternoon. I also noticed several completely incorrect sections of the map, which was disappointing to find. Also, there's lots of construction and vegetation restoration going on, so there are lots of parts of campus that I can't use. Oh well. I think I have my advanced course designed (for the most part). It's a touch under 5km, I think. Six more courses to go... | ||

| Orienteering race 33:42 [4]*** 4.5 km (7:29 / km) | ||
| spiked:16/17c | ||
| New map just north of SeaTac airport. (It used to be a residential area, but the airport bought it and turned it into a park because it is too loud to live there. There were airplanes landing every five minutes or so!).
Spiked the first 13 controls, but I made a 2.5 minute mistake on #14. It was a pretty sketchy control, so I intended to take a longer, but safer route, but I got pulled over by a nice open area, missed a trail, and ended up way too far north to #15. I spiked the rest, finishing in a pretty decent time, beating Dave, Rick, Steve, and Jake (on my rivals list). Roger and Nicolay both beat me, as did two guys who are super-good orienteers who are new to the Seattle area. Even without my big mistake, these two guys still beat me. Results aren't up, so I haven't seen times from Eric, Ben, Oyvind, and Tyler. Other notable stats: I've now finished four consecutive sub-10 min/km courses, something I've never done before. I've now finished five consecutive sub-9 min/km courses in Seattle, something I've never done before, either.

| I'm designing the courses for the COC meet on 12/16 at UW. I spent a few hours walking around, checking things out. | ||
