Volleyball 1:45:00 [2]
shoes: Pearl Izumi SyncroSeek
Last round of the regular season in volleyball. We officially went 3-3, but two of those were forfeit wins. We played one of the better teams and got beat pretty good both games, despite playing decently. We split against one of the middle teams. We're getting better, but so is everyone else.

I had my best day at the net in a long time, and I didn't make all that many errors overall. It was fun. Big tournament next week!

Monday Jul 30

Softball 2:30:00 [2]
Another BEESA doubleheader, our fourth in a row. And, for the fourth time, we win the first game and lose the second.

The first team wasn't that great, and we didn't play that inspired, winning 12-4. Mike (our worst hitter) drew a crucial walk to load the bases with 2 outs one inning, and Ryan hit an inside-the-park grand slam. That was the game-breaker.

We came out really flat in the second game, only able to score 1 run in a 10-1 loss. We stranded bases-loaded situations in three innings. One of those situations was a choke-job by me. I'm the lead-off hitter and batting over .650 for the season. I can't do that.

I finished both games batting 3-for-8. I played second base in the first game and saw a LOT of action. It was fun. And zero errors! I pitched the second game, and I thought I did a decent job, considering the skill of the other teams' batters.

Street Scramble race 1:30:00 [3]** 6.2 mi (14:30 / mi)
spiked:34/35c shoes: Pearl Izumi SyncroSeek
Pigs on Parade Street Scramble, which was just like the original Mascots on Parade Run that OK put on in June 2003.

I ran with Gina, and we snagged 35 of the 40 checkpoints in just 90 minutes. We had a two-hour time limit, but we breezed through all of the downtown stuff a lot quicker than planned, so we left the 5 outliers. Each pig was worth 10 points.

UPDATE: Here's the route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1181391
We only finished 20 points back of the winners, and we had over 30 minutes to spare. We definitely could have won this thing. And, had I ran solo, I might have cleared the course (would have been close).

Volleyball 2:00:00 [2]
Volleyball summer league.

We finally had our set rotation for the first time all summer (Jesus, Elán, Gina, and me), and we played well, going 4-2, winning two via forfeit, two against a respectable team, and losing two fairly closely against the #1 team.

I passed and setted as well I can remember, and I had some pretty fun spikes. Something about playing with Jesus definitely makes my raise my game. My jump serves were pretty effective, except in one game where I missed three in a row.

During the 40 minutes when our opponents didn't show up, we played couple vs. couple, which was fun. Jesus and I also invented a warm-up game called "T-Rex Volleyball", which is absolutely hysterical.

Volleyball is so much fun.

Note
oh snap.

the software upgrade will be postponed, so we're all coming into work tomorrow.

yeah.

Thursday Jul 19

Note
1) I may get an unexpected day off work on Saturday because the databases are being upgraded.

2) There's an o-meet that's just been added on August 4th, which happens to be on my scheduled weekend off! It's an 11-km course out near Cle Elum.

3) Peter and Madelaine are coming out here that weekend, too, but not in time for the meet.

4) Eric pitched an idea to me about getting Cascade involved in organizing a summer sprint series (since we already have a winter series and the ultimate series in the spring). This is something that I've wanted to see happen for about a year now, and maybe now with Eric's help, we can make it happen. We also talked about having a mapping/course-setting workshop, and tying that in with getting beginner mappers to help map sprint-o venues.

5) I've got some plans in work for a sprint-o tournament, tentatively dubbed "Seattle Sprint-O Spectacular", to be held on the Woodland Park / West Woodland, and Green Lake Park maps I need to stitch together and update. I think it would be a lot of fun. I already have a t-shirt designed for it, too! Maybe this could be a kick-off event for the summer sprint series next summer?

Softball 1:15:00 [1]
The team played two games, but I only played one.

The manager didn't have enough girls there, so we had to play only 8 in the field (2 short). As a pitcher, this was a disaster. Disaster. We got killed. Plus, we had to take an automatic out in the 9th spot in the lineup. So that hurt us.

Batting-wise, I was 2-for-3, breaking my hiting streak after 12 at-bats. My non-hit was a line-drive not high enough over the pitcher's arms. His glove tipped it and slowed it enough for them to get our runner out at 2nd. Bummer.

Between games, a ton of people showed up, so we had 16 on the roster, including 2 other pitchers. Shannon also put me batting 16th in the lineup. I didn't want to bat 16th, and I didn't want to pitch just a few innings, so I went home.

I'm glad I had that opportunity, because I *really* needed to catch up on sleep. I was in bed by 7:30.

Monday Jul 16

Softball 2:30:00 [2]
First doubleheader of the second season, and we split. We won against the gimme team, 19-1, and we lost against a middle-of-the-pack team by a couple of runs. We were missing three of our better fielders, and it showed.

I played 3rd base during the first game, where I made two nice plays and one error. I pitched half of the second game, and I got rocked, allowing 13 runs in 3 innings. At the plate, I was as good as can be: 10-10.

Saturday Jul 14

Note
It's ramped up to 7 days a week now. Luckily (?), there's a rule which mandates your 4th weekend to be off, so my next day off is August 4th, which is 184 work hours away!

Orienteering race 23:15 [4]*** 2.7 km (8:37 / km)
9c shoes: Vasque Lightspeed
A fun evening course at Wilburton Hill in Bellevue in 90 degree heat, which wasn't as bad as I remembered it being in Kansas (it's the humidity, duh).

This park has a new permanent course, so 5 of the 9 controls were the small plaques, hidden on the backsides of posts and fences and on cinderblocks at features in the woods. I lost some time trying to find the plaques because I'm used to seeing flags and not reading control descriptions.

Nailed 1, bobbled for a step or two on the way to 2 because a park bench walkway resembled a trail junction. 3 was ok. I should have trusted my instinct instead of double-check the map, so I lost a few seconds here. 4 was fairly long, and it was back in the woods a bit. I didn't lose much time here, but when I popped out of the woods, I gave away the location to Eric.

5 was short and easy, and I was still ahead of Eric at this point, but we took differing routes to 6. I thought I took a very nice route choice, until I found out that the indistinct trail really wasn't there anymore, so I had to go down to the next trail. Eric said that he knew the trail wasn't exactly there, so he took another route entirely. He punched ahead of me at 6.

I got really hungry on the way to 7, so I slowed a bit. I also lost a few seconds looking for the plaque. I finally caught up to Mike looking for 8 (I think Mike had one of his better runs today). Terry was also back there looking for 8, as it wasn't exactly in the right spot or something. I found it after about 90 seconds perhaps, and then I headed out to 9.

9 was on a post near the finish, but I wanted to make sure that ran to the correct post, since there are several all over the park. I probably ran too slow here. Then the short sprint up the hill.

Apparently, Eric had trouble at 8, as I passed him there without realizing it. He still beat me by about a minute, though.

I should have run course #2 also, but by the time I realized that it didn't overlap at all with course #3, I had already downed a can of pop and two hot dogs.

Volleyball 1:40:00 [3]
Volleyball. We had all five people there, so we had one person sit for an entire game. I sat out the 3rd game (the first against the #1 team), after I whacked my head pretty good on the court at the end of the 2nd game.

Anyway, as a team, we went 4-1-1, which included a win against the top team , and a come-from-behind win against one or the worst teams. We tend to play up or down to our competition.

I figured out something with my jump serve. In the first game, I served 10 service points in a row. It was amazing. My accuracy went down later, as I served several out in one game. Also, when Elan gives me short sets, I'm all over them, I think because my timing on short sets is good (like my service toss), but I still don't know how to approach well on the high sets.

Monday Jul 9

Softball 2:30:00 [2]
Two playoff games.

We won the semifinal, 13-7. I pitched the whole game and did pretty well. At the plate, I was 3-4 with 3 runs scored. It was especially fun because our opponent killed us 20-7 the previous week. We brought our A-game.

And then we proceded to go limp at the plate in the championship game, managing only 2 hits in the first six innings (or something embarrassing like that). I pitched the first five innings, and we "held" them to 13 runs. We made a few errors, but this team scored 35 runs in the semifinal game, so they have hot bats.

They were one out from a 13-0 shutout. I was on first base with two outs (I reached on a fielder's choice, so I was a horrible 0-3). Anyway, Thomas got a hit, then Joe, and I was the first to score. Our two-out rally ended up scoring 7 runs, and at least we had out opponents yelling at each other a bit, so that was fun.

We finished the season 8-3-1. Not bad for a team that went a combined 9-30-1 over our first four seasons. The summer season starts next week.
Note
Ugh... 56-hour weeks are rough when you're playing 3 softball games and 6 volleyball games a week. And then occasional weekday orienteering events. By the time I get home, it'a already past my I-have-to-be-at-work-at-5am bedtime. It's exhausting. It's hard to sleep at 8:30pm. I feel like a kindergartener.

I have barely any time to hang out with my roommates or my north-end friends, or Gina.

The good news is that I'm timing my three-consecutive working well (we're not allowed to work 4 consecutive weekends). If I work the next 3, I'll have the first weekend of August off, which means that I can go to Seafair with Gina again (our first dating anniversary!). And then after 3 more weekends of work, I have Labor Day weekend off! Which means that I can probably add a few days of vacation and head up to Barebones.

However, I have no idea when I'm going to get this summer mapping project done. It's starting to look hopeless.

Street Scramble race 2:33:26 [3]** 13.7 mi (11:12 / mi)
shoes: Pearl Izumi SyncroSeek
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1116986

Ballard Street Scramble, 3 hours on foot, solo.

This one was interesting in that I pretty much got all of the checkpoints possible on foot, and I returned with 25 minutes to go. The other checkpoints were way out there, and I probably could have extended the beginning of my route to snag one more (which would have given me the win overall).

Not only did I return early, but it was obvious after 1:15 that I was I was going to get the ones I did in plenty of time, so I took it easy. I walked up hills, took the scenic route to include some neighborhood parks. It was fun.

Though, I really booked it early, faster than my ultra-fast Seward Park pace from last time. I guess that's why I'm a little more sore.. and I was cramping a little bit... probably the heat.

It's weird, because just 2 weeks ago, I did a street scramble, two sprints, and a goat in 3 days and I didn't feel anything (other than being exhausted). And this weekend, I run just one street scramble and I'm a little sore. (not super sore, but enough to feel it).

oh, I also ended up winning the Series Championship for the Corporate Division, so that was exciting. Vlad and Mike (also running with REACH) also completed 4 races, so they qualified and finished 4th and 5th!

Note
Working on the 4th of July. But hey, I found some time to completely update my AP log!

Monday Jul 2

Softball 2:30:00 [2]
Last two softball games of the season. We won the first pretty big. And then we lost focus and mailed in the second one, losing big. We were guaranteed the #2 seed in next week's playoffs no matter what we did. We finished 7-2-1 on the season, our best result so far. We play the team that beat us in the first round next week. I'm not too worried.

Batting-wise, I was 7 for 8 over both games. I played some 1st base when Blake got hurt. I received a warning for throwing a pitch at one of the jerky batters (he deserved it). Joe and Matt each made awesome outfield catches.
