| Cascade had a first-ever event on the new Hyak Lake map up at Snoqualmie Pass (summer photos here: http://www.wiol.org/Hyak/Photos/ ). I invited several of my friends to attend, but the constant rain and chilly temps only brought out the heartiest six of them.
I ran Course #4 (advanced long), in my signature pink & blue outfit. Everyone else was wearing long pants, long sleeves, and raincoats. One of them said to me, "You know, as wet and cold as it is, I'd really recommend you to wear something a little warmer, but I've never seen you wear anything else, so I suppose you'll be all right." Start to #1: It took me 14 seconds to figure out where I was on the map and start running the correct direction. This was a quick 500m run up the road. #1 to #2: 400m leg, all road and trail. I passed Nick (started 2 minutes ahead on course #3) halfway down the trail. The control was behind a rootstock, and there were a bevy of people down there, including Steve (who started 4 minutes ahead), Chris (course #3?), and Tori (course #4). #2 to #3: 200m leg, a quick sprint across the marsh. There were a lot of us here, and I was the third to punch (the guy in front of me took *forever* to punch!). #3 to #4: 100m of woods crashing, 500m of rocky road running. I arrived at the manned control seconds after Steve and seconds before some other Course #4 runner who started well ahead of me. --this is where course 4 deviates from 3-- #4 to #5: 400m, all uphill. Steve extended his lead here, as I had to walk/jog up most of the climb. Took the trail right to the control, which was surrounded by a huge puddle. At this control was some adventure racer guy with his wife. #5 to #6: 150m. I saw Steve and the guy right behind me head for the "semi-open" area to approach the control most directly. I started that way and got about 20 yards in and decided to backtrack out to the road and approach from up top. This was much more fruitful, as I could see the control in the marsh from the road, and I had great access to it. From the road, I could see the folks slogging through that mess (and I knew that they couldn't see the flag). I scampered down the hill and punched, turning my 30-second lag into a 30-second lead. #6 to #7: 100m. I blew this one a little bit. I wanted to exit the last control quickly so not to give it away to the others, and I ended up having to approach this one from the west instead of the south. I actually ended up too high on the hill, and ran into some knolls instead of the cliff. I was worried that the guys behind me might catch up to me on this leg, but they didn't. It wasn't an easy flag to find, but it would have been easier coming from the south. #7 to #8: 100m. Another short leg, this one a lot easier. Down from the cliff to the trail, down the trail to the foot of another cliff. I passed Oyvind and his dog (started 12 minutes ahead) here. #8 to #9: 100m. Mindless trail following up to the road, bam, there's the control. #9 to #10: 1600m. This was the super long leg, and I didn't extend much of a lead over Oyvind. There was a route choice that could have saved maybe 200 meters, but included 30m of climb and a potentially sketchy trail. I played it safe. At the end of the road run, I had to crash through some more undergrowth to a small pond. Here, I caught up to "British Guy" (course ?). Total time here was about 41 minutes. --this is where course 3 rejoins course 4-- #10 to #11: 200m. This was the hardest leg of the day, I think because the map only had 20-foot contours, so the map detail was pretty weak. British Guy and I headed into the woods, and I know we were correct through 100m. Soon after, we ran into Eileen (course #3) and Red Shirt Guy (course ?). I ended up too far south/too far uphill, and I started backtracking over to where Eileen was. Just when I reached her, we heard a yelp from the British Guy who had found it, and we looked over, and sure enough, there were two boulders there. Total time here was 48 minutes. #11 to #12: 350m. This was the slowest leg of the day, having to bash through the slow and difficult (and wet!) forest. British Guy, Eileen, and I all headed the right way, just through different spots in the brush. I fell down a lot in here, and I was starting to get pretty cold. There were a series of four small lakes to lead you pretty much right to the control. By this time Kean (course 3?) backtracked his way here and punched with the rest of us. #12 to #13: 130m. Nice short leg that finally exited that forest! The four of us hit the marsh and Kean and I headed left (correct), Eileen and British guy headed right.Of the four, I was the first to punch, and when I did, I ran into Nick again here. #13 to #14: 1100m. A quick bash through the brush, and then out to a pretty spongy, but fast, marsh. I was leading the herd into another "semi-open area", where we all hacked our own routes through. Back to some gravel road running again, and the British Guy was gaining a little bit. He finally passed me, right as I stopped in my tracks because I just missed my trail turnoff. I backtracked 10 feet, and he made some comment about it not looking right, and he kept going. I found the circle just fine, but I had a hard time of finding the flag, as there were several knoll-ish features here, and to make matters worse, it was on the far side of the knoll. I found it without too much trouble, though. #14 to #15: 100m. I backtracked 30m down the trail, and here I ran into Eileen again (she was heading to #14). This control was due north of where I met her, but it involved more slashing, and I must have gotten off my bearing a little bit. I was looking for a man-made feature, and I must have been standing within 20m of the flag when I got pulled over by the large power tower 50m farther north. When I got there, there was a flag, but with the wrong number. I backtracked through the brush and found #15 fairly easily, and still ahead of British Guy and Eileen. #15 to #16: 100m. Back out to the tall tower, and down the road. #16 to Finish: 100m. Gravel road running all the way in. I finished with a total time of 81:15, which was only time of the day so far. I waited around for maybe 20 minutes as several others came in, all with slower times (even Rick, who I've never beaten before!). Mike, who carpooled with Nick and me, was waiting for me at the finish. He did Course #1. Nick finished about five minutes later. We all changed into dry clothes, chatted with a few other people for a bit, and left. I didn't see Joe, Steve, Eliza, and Ashley there, as they arrived after we started, and we left before they came back. I'm anxious to see the final results. This was one of my finer runs on terrain like this, especially given the weather conditions.

| SCASA Coed League, Week #3
Win 6-3. I goalied the whole game, and it was pretty boring. The other team was shorthanded by three players (not enough girls, but plenty of guy subs), and they scored on fast break goals through the defense. Two of the goals were on perfectly placed shots that I couldn't do a thing about. The third goal involved a big time collision between me and goal scorer. I didn't get to the ball in time, and after his follow-through, he kept going and slammed into me. Even though they scored, I think everyone was impressed. The scorer said, "dude, that guy is solid!"

| BEEBA Fall League, Week #4
Loss, 68-43 We played our best game of the season. Unfortunately, we also played the best and most fundamentally-sound team in the league. They had a stud out there who must have had over half of their points. More frustratingly, there were only 5 guys on their team (middle-aged, too!) and we had 8, and we couldn't wear them down. They were good. Believe it or not, we actually had a 24-18 lead at one point.
