| FINALLY!! An orienteering meet!
Cascade OC, Ultimate Orienteer #1 North SeaTac Park I was out-of-shape, and rusty. I nailed #1 and #2, but I lost about a minute on #3, where I ran too far down the trail. And then I ran too far down the open area. #4 was fine. I cut in too early at #5, thinking that the white on the map was the open area I was looking for (very open white). I realized this and lost about 30 seconds. #6 was fine, and #7 I took a risk, thinking that I'd be able to hop a fence. However, the fence didn't have the top bar on it and it was really sharp, and I didn't want to be medevac'ed, so I lost another 30 seconds to run around. #8 and #9 sucked, because I was winded, and it was all uphill. I had to walk in places. I navigated fine. #10, #11, #12, #13, and #14... I spiked all of those and ran all of it. 3 mistakes, a total of 2 minutes. There were a lot of hesitations out there.... where I knew that the flag would be on the other side of the tree/rock/whatever, but I would think otherwise, and lose a few seconds. I think that's the rust showing... I'm not sure how 25 and change fared in the standings. Eric finished just under 20, but his recent training has been low. Targo was 23 and change, and I'm guessing that many other people did better than me today. Scott, Mike, and Gina all ran the same course I did, with Scott finishing 10 minutes behind me, Gina around 16, and Mike was way off. Of the 14 legs, Scott actually beat me on 8 of them, but he had a 9-minute mistake and a 3-minute mistake. Beth also came along and did a beginner course... and she got really really lost out there. I'm meet directing the next Cascade meet, which unfortunately for me, is the Score-O, which means that I can't compete. That means that my next competitive orienteering event will be over a month away (again). At least I can get my competitive navigation fix before then. The first Street Scramble is tomorrow. | ||
