Hiking 3:40:00 [2]7.5 mi (29:20 / mi) +650m 14:22 / km
Hike to Lake Serene with Mike, Steve, and Abby (Mike and Steve are going to Big Muddy next weekend). This was a much easier hike than Tuesday (about half the climb over the same distance).

The trail was a little sloppy and several downed trees. Visibility at the top was low, we couldn't even see the top of Mt. Index behind the lake. But, the lake was stunning, still 90% covered in ice!

Saturday May 19

Street Scramble 3:05:00 [3]** 13.8 mi (13:24 / mi)
shoes: Pearl Izumi SyncroSeek
Bellevue Street Scramble.

I teamed with Gina, and she forgot her ankle brace (which helps her knee). Therefore, her knee was aching pretty bad over the last 90 minutes and we had to painfully walk back and finish 5 minutes late (penalties!). Navigation was almost perfect. Route-planning was excellent. On a good day, I think we could have nabbed 790 points over 16.9 miles.

But, we still finished 1st in the Corporate Division (barely beating two others in a increasingly competitive division). Gina and I took our $20 gift certificate and bought the new Wilco album and ice cream and tea. (Because, you know, telling everyone on Attackpoint that you won the Wilco album while orienteering is pretty awesome. Speaking of which, I finally used my $20 gift certificate to Metsker Maps last week, a prize from a December Street Scramble. I saved some cash on two wicked cool maps, one of which I've been eyeing for some time!).

Orienteering 14:19 [4]*** 1.9 km (7:32 / km)

Eric put on a training event, which consisted of a novice course, and two short intermediate sprint-like courses. There was also a mini street scramble of sorts, too.

I ran the two intermediate courses back-to-back, and I had a fairly easy time, though I lost some time on the first two controls because I was not used to a 1:2500 scale at all. I hit a trail junction in the woods within about 5 seconds of entering the woods... totally didn't expect that to come that fast. So I had to stop and look.

The second leg consisted of running through "a lot" of green, when in actuality, it was maybe 30 meters at the most. I ran around. I spiked everything after that.

#2 on the second map was an interesting route choice. I took the more "obvious" route, but that included a steep down and up. The other choice was longer, but faster and flatter. However, the "climb" I did was only 9 meters... and it was a short course and I wasn't fatigued enough to really get slowed down. I might estimate that both routes were within 5 seconds of each other.

The new Czech guy ran it 50 seconds faster, but he stopped in between courses.

Regulars Debbie, Ardis, Ken, and Kean also ran, as did a new adventure-racer guy, Murray. I don't know what their times were. They all ran early while I was teaching a newbie.

Picked up six control flags plus one pin flag.

Hiking 2:12:00 [3]* 4.0 mi (32:59 / mi) +1160m 10:47 / km
Granite Mountain summit ascent.

I was shoooting for 1:45, but there was a lot of snow up there. It was a warm day, which made the snow soft. Great for ease of climbing, but it required a lot of energy.

Hiking 1:08:00 [2]*
Granite Mountain summit descent (minus running part)

The descent was much quicker, as I glissaded (standing) down the first 1200'. On a similar hike a few summers ago, by ascent vs. descent times were very similar. Today, it was quite different. I got down 50 minutes faster than it took me to get up.
Running 10:00 [3]1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
Granite Mountain descent (trail-running)

Once I got through the tight switchbacks and the gnarlyness of the trail subsided a bit, I decided to try some trail running. I ran continuously for exactly 10 minutes, which is about all that my knees could take. It was all downhill, with a mix of rocks and dirt.

It was a lot of fun, and I was amazed at how my confidence picked up in terms of foot placement in certain sections. I also didn't realize how much of an ab workout trail running is.

I'm approximating about a mile of running.

Softball 1:15:00 [2]
Holy flippin' cow!

Short story: Down 5 runs going into the bottom of the last inning, and we had to get through the bottom 8 batters (of 12) of our lineup. The first 6 runners reached base safely, then we got two outs. I was up with with 2 outs, 2 on, winning run on 2nd. And I walked... (I'm a wimp).

Then Thomas came up and lined a hit up the middle. We won! Clutch batting by everyone down the stretch!

We beat the defending champs in exciting fashion, and a team who has never won more than 3 games in a season previously, is now 4-0!
