Orienteering race 1:10:16 [4]*** 7 km (10:02 / km)
spiked:10/13c shoes: Vasque Lightspeed
Sammamish's annual Salmon Days event. It was raining steadily, and it was a long course, so that was an interesting challenge.

Fred set the courses, and although I'm not typically a fan of Fred's courses (the legs are too monotonous), this one was pretty interesting.

Because the course is super flat, I was able to run the entire time, except for my "where is it?!?!?" wandering at #9.

I've been playing a lot of Hearts on the computer recently, and this O meet felt like playing Hearts. There were 13 "hands" on the course, and I had pretty good cards on most of them. And with those good cards, I took few or zero points on those hands. However, on one those hands with tough cards (# 5), I took the queen of spades. And on another one of those hands with tough cards (# 9), I took the queen of spades and about 10 more points. That's how it felt.

Start to #1: Nice, through the wide open park area.

#1 to #2: I ran to the wrong tree in the rough open area, but corrected ok. I probably lost 30-40 seconds here.

#2 to #3: backtracked a bit, then open park run. Easy.

#3 to #4: Super long leg, and I purposely decided to go trail running
instead of running through parking lots. This decision cost me a minute or so of route choice, but it was something that I wanted to do. Plus, I could scope out #12 along the way.

#4 to #5. I took the paved path for this one. Since I was already wet anyway, I should have slogged through the marsh, but I didn't know how think the veggie was, so I ran around the long way. I also got pinned in by a fence on my exit. I lost about 5 minutes entering and exiting this control (running around the fenced in area more than I needed to).

#5 to #6: Through a complex of Siemens buidlings, easy.

#6 to #7: I almost made the mistake I made last year (taking the shortcut
trail, only to find no access to the road because of the bridge). I took a shortcut later in the leg, that seemed scary at times because it didn't feel like the overgrown trail was taking me in the right direction, but it did. Also, I hit the flag spot on (no searching), in an area where I could have lost a few minutes guessing.

#7 to #8: Ugly run through rough open. Not ankle friendly. Map was a bit off here, but I was able to see the flag through the thicket.

#8 to #9: Disaster leg. I lost 10-12 minutes here. First, I missed the bend in the overgrown trail, and hit the swawp to the E first. Backtracked around to the thick green areas. The flag was just north of a thick green area, and the terrain had a huge swatch of dark green, and then a small set of low thickets. The control was on one of the low thickets... which didn't look that dark green on the map. Very confusing.

#9 to #10: I ran out to the soccer field and around, which seemed to be the best choice, according to Peter.

#11 to #12 to #13 to finish: Spiked them all.
C • Hearts / #9 7

Course 4 (7.0km) - Splits

Saturday Sep 29

Orienteering race 27:00 [3]2.3 km (11:44 / km)
shoes: Vasque Lightspeed
1st half of cell phone-o with Gina. She had the map and I ran. This event was a struggle, mostly due to our crappy phones, which have bad connection to the network. It was really hard to hear each other a lot. Really hard.

#1 was tricky because of jackhammers. It was hard to hear, and I had to run right by them.

#5 was a disaster. I had to run back to #4 three times and try it again.

I overran two others out there, but I was directed back with no huge issues.

North Seattle CC

2nd half of cell phone-o. Gina ran, I directed. This went smoother, but was still frustrating with the connection thing. I only recall only a few bobbles, one about halfway through, another near the end. Both were about 30 second mistakes.

Memory-O at North Seattle CC.

Wow, this was fun! (I've never done Memory-O before).

16 controls, and I ran without a map. I got to see a snippet of the map at the start to get me to #1, and at #1, I got to see a snippet of map that got me to #2, and so on. Some of the pieces of map were really small, where the best route actually took you off the "map". I spent about 5 seconds at each control studying the map.

Because I had spent an hour with the cell phone course stuff, I knew the area pretty well, so I spiked every control.

I'd like to do this again sometime.

Volleyball 2:40:00 [2]
Volleyball with the B Leaguers in Seattle.

I got to the gym an hour early to work on my serves. During play, we won one, tied one, and lost three, so we're definitely improving. I played solidly, as I had warmed up a lot and was sharp from A league the night before.

What's fun about the B league is that I spike A LOT. I'm not the 3rd option. I'm the first option. Heck, I even get set up for back row sets! The team certainly has potentional. I'm just worried about how the captain does... as she still needs a lot of work.

Volleyball 2:00:00 [3]
I'm rating this as a 3 intensity because we were shorthanded (3-4 people), and I was all over the place. We won 2 and lost 2. (Bye during the other 2).
