Boggs Mountain, CA Ok, we might as well get into this. http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=1... Start to 1: Not the way to start out, kids. 9:30 mistake out of the gate. What happened? I was going conservatively, checking off features. Trail bend, road, open area, trail, road, trail, open area with green, large boulder, reentrant, and then I stopped, 95% of the way there. I saw some stony ground, and I was standing in an open area. I thought I had made a parallel feature error to the SE, so I backed out. But I was in the correct place, but it was just that the rocks weren't mapped and the open area interpretation was different than I expected. Why did it happen? I'm scared of the first control at A-meets. Even though I attacked conservatively and was collecting features all over the place, because I've boomed first controls before, I was more susceptible into believing that I had made an error, when I actually hadn't. I pulled the trigger too fast in "relocating", all because of confidence issues. Sad, because I was navigating this one well. Also, the map seemed sketchy here (rocky ground not mapped SW of the control). 1 to 2: It was good to have a nice long, downhill leg next, so I could focus on something else than a huge mistake early. I handrailed down the trail, then skipped through the slash down to the next road, exactly where the streambed started, and I had another handrail all the way to the next road down. Very good leg for me. 2 to 3: Ugh, another mistake. 4-5 minutes here, on a simple leg. What happened? I was trying to head straight at it, collecting features as I went. However, when I hit the first road I came to, it wasn't the one heading NE-SW. It was the one going E-W. It took me a long time to decipher what had happened here, because I didn't ever notice the trail I was looking for. I stood there for several minutes, trying to align things. It was the GIANT boulders that gave it away, and then I was ok. Why did it happen? I didn't use a compass. My sidehilling was actually downhilling, and in skirting a ravine, I headed more out of the way. My bearing gradually worsened. 3 to 4: Good finish to this leg. Finishing the climb early in the leg was rough, fitness was already an issue. Good nav along the road. I also had enough confidence to ditch the trail early and head down so that I'd hit the right cliff from below, instead of guessing from above. Very good leg. 4 to 5: Up the hill to the road, and I took a bit of a shortcut at the gate, up the small trail. Easy. Another spike. 5 to 6: Biggest, baddest climb I've ever done in orienteering. I decided to do it early and get it out of the way. Eric went more directly, crossing a lot of rocks. I want to go the way I did because attacking the control would be easier, plus I would get some running along some flat trail. Had I tried climbing the big control, my brain would have been mush, and there's a good chance I would have completely missed what I was looking for. Aside from the climb, I liked my route here. 6 to 7: Still reeling from that wicked climb, I walked most of this one. I was a tad to the left, as I hit the gate, but I found the control perfectly, even though the vegetation boundary it was was less than "distinct". 7 to 8: I was consuming some Gu here, so I wandered left, which was ok, as the trail caught me. This also let me take a ribbon of open land with scattered trees take me right to the control. (funny how I could easily identify this vegetation, when I had trouble with most everything else). 8 to 9: I wanted to hit this one conservatively, as it was another non-distinct open area in the woods. I dog-legged left back to the trail, cut a corner, and hit a large distinct open area first, and continued that incorrect bearing across the next trail and into the woods. I missed the feature to the right and hit the catching feature (the ride). Backed in and got it. Lost about 90 seconds here. A thumb compass would have definitely have saved me here. 9 to 10: Backed out to the ride and to the trail. Flailed a bit through an open area, but I recognized the open area with distinct trees just past the saddle, into the next open area, and saw the vegetation guarding the rock feature. 10 to 11: Bashed down to the road, crested the first hill, and into the reentrant, and skirted south of the next hill. I got really scared when I saw the houses, and I stopped and almost panicked. But, the edge of the map was just past the control, so I wasn't too worried. However, I felt like I was a bit too low, so I headed back up and spotted the knee-high "cliff". I lost about another 90 seconds here, but it was a tricky spot in some vagueish semi-open brushy vegetation, so I'm happy with it. 11 to 12: Another hill, more climb, more heavy breathing. Once it started downhill again, I ran along the handrails all the way there. Looking at the map, I went both out of my way and climbed an extra 25m on this leg, instead of contouring straight at it. Hmm. I guess I didn't want to mess with the vegetation or something. This was a pretty silly route choice error, especially since the feature was a building. I wonder how I didn't see this one. Too reliant on handrails, still? 12 to 13: And then I skip handrails altogether on the next leg! I ran down the open area, across the trail, across the rentrant, up to the saddle, and right to this one. No handrails, easy! 13 to 14: Short leg, right of the line, saw the trail bend, headed up, hit the wrong side of the thicket, but circled around it ok. 14 to 15: Trail exit, cut the switchback perfectly, took the trail to just past the manzanitas, and used them to guide me there. 15 to 16: Another 9:00 minute mistake, kiddos. Don't get too comfortable out there! What happened? I climbed up to the trail, , rounded the dark green, and cut in one open area too early. I mistook the vegetration boundary + ribbon of open area to be a ride. Classic parallel feature error. I turned SE and started looking for thickets with flags... until I crossed my ride and hit that boulder with another flag on it. Took me a while to realize what I'd done. Tried again and hit the ride. I cut in and saw a flag... but when I neared it, it was on a trail junction. Whoops. Back again and found it. Why did it happen? I lost focus. I was getting pretty comfortable, since I didn't have any major mistakes for 12 consecutive controls. I was also getting pretty tired, and I didn't pay attention when I turned early. Then, instead of trying to figure out what was going on, I just flaired around looking for orange until I hit that boulder (and again later when I saw that other control). 16 to 17: Winsplits says I lost 5 minutes here, but I reckon only 2 of that is from navigation. What happened? I exited 16 a bit slow, just to make sure that I was leaving toward the correct trail. I shortcutted a bit to the right one, and followed it for a long while. Eventually, when it switchbacked, I stayed straight and contoured. However, I hit up too high, and missed my cliff. I hit the one to the NW first, and backed SE until I drew the lucky lotto ball finally. I probably should have aimed low, so that I wouldn't have exited the light green into a bunch of rock features. Why did it happen? I probably should have aimed low, so that I wouldn't have exited the light green into a bunch of rock features. 17 to 18: Geez, I went out of my for climb again (45m!) I did get to run down and flat on a trail, so that was nice. And the last climb, though steep, was navigationally easy for me. But again, had I aimed right at it, going straight was flat along a sidehill. I think I got scared of the green. It'd be interesting to see how my time would have been that way. 18 to 19: Another error, WinSplits says 2:30. What happened? I took the trail around, spit out into vagueness, and floundered around looking for boulders. I found the end of that ride, and backed in. Why did it happen? I was dead tired. I thought about walking straight up the hill at it, but I thought maybe I could run (ha!) if I went around. By the time I got spit off the trail, I just figured I'd get lucky and stumbled into it, instead of (gasp!) navigate at an orienteering event. 19 to 20: Down, down, down the hill. Again, I was kinda hoping to get lucky, and this time I was fortunate to spot the rock. I was off to the right (I can't say that I was purposely aiming off here, a good idea, but I just thappened to). 20 to 21: I flew down the hill, and I got confused when I saw the flag. It was so close to the finish! I thought that it was the finish flag that I headed the other way. Lost 5-10 seconds here! 21 to Finish: So.... I'm near the bottom of the pack, I'm dead tired, but who comes down with the fastest finish split? Uh huh, that's right. At least I did something right out there. If you actually read this whole thing, please leave me a comment. I don't really know who all reads my log, so it'd be nice to know.

| This weekend's a-meet is going to kill me. I'm not ready to run.
I also need to get it together for US Champs. 12.9 km? Geez. I'm gonna die. UPDATE: I'm going to run 4.6 miles tonight. With a map.

Ran over to Gina's house for dinner. This time doesn't include about 4 minutes worth of stops. I ran with a USGS topo section with my house in the SW corner, Gina's apartment in the NE corner. I ran up the only two hills in Green Lake Park. I think there's a way to shortcut some time through the strip malls south of Northgate Mall. And, it was too dark to really tell, but there might be some trails in the Thornton Creek Park #6, to shave some time and add some trails. I also missed a turn here, and ended up trying to cut through the lawn at the new Northgate Community Center, but I got fenced in. I had to wait a mammoth 2:41 for the crosswalk at Northgate and Roosevelt. Aside from the traffic lights, I ran the entire time, which I wasn't expecting I guess, considering the lack of running shape I'm in, and that after the first 90 seconds, it's pretty much all uphill. My HR was pretty much between 165 and 175 every time I checked. I must have hit the 227 during the kick at the last block, as that was the only time I was really pushing it. | BEVA Co-ed "B" League
Lost 4, tied 1 We had a 13-4 lead against the undefeated team, so that was fun for a while, especially since we're in last place by a good margin. I don't get along with my co-worker who put the team together. She doesn't make an effort to improve, she stands around too much during the game (case in point: during our 13-4 lead, she never touched the ball once). Yet, she's the first person to criticize our mistakes, (she says that Sergio's favorite hobby is missing serves) and when she makes a mistake, she laughs at it. After we lost to the undefeated team, she blamed the rest of us for the loss, and I pointed out that she never makes a good effort or goes for the ball. Her response is that she doesn't want to run into anyone and get hurt. My thought is that if you want to stand around and not get hurt, then you shouldn't be playing volleyball. I'm scared to make a mistake with this team, which actually breeds more mistakes. Whenever I'm set up (which is a lot), right before I swing through, I think "You'd better make sure that you don't screw up, or else you'll get yelled at!". And what happens, is that I ease off the ball, and I don't snap my wrist, and the ball floats and goes deep. Ugh. Simon told me today that he had a hard time sleeping last night. He said that he laid there, tense, reanalyzing all of the plays about which he got criticized about. Honestly, we'd be much better playing with just 4 people, but she's the manager. Oh, I almost forgot.... one of games ended with 5 minutes until the next one, so I ran some suicide sprints, hence the super high heart rate.

| I don't know if i like my AP handle, kupackman, anymore. It's still my AIM handle, but I don't know if it reflects my O' identity at all. Maybe I should change it to "OKpinkshirt" or something. AP people don't know who I am with kupackman, but they might remember that one guy at that one event who wore a pink shirt.
But then what happens when I finally get around to placing that OK shirt order and I wear a blue shirt from time to time. What then? I'll probably need pink socks to wear with a blue shirt.

| BENVA Co-ed A
4 wins, 0 losses We won all four games solidly, albeit against the bottom two teams in the league. I played really well, with only 5 unforced errors in 4 games. I missed 4 serves (2 long, 1 wide, 1 into the net), and I passed one over the net that turned into a spike for them. I only set twice, but they were both assists to Ivan. And all of my hits were error-free. I made 15 of 19 serves, with over half at 100% intensity. This was also the first time I've worn a heart-rate monitor while exercising. It was fun.
