Orienteering race 42:53 [4]*** 5.2 km (8:15 / km)
spiked:11/14c shoes: Vasque Lightspeed
Winter Series #5, Bridle Trails State Park

Well, I had one goal going into this race. Since I'd never orienteered at this park, and because I have zero margin for error in this year's Winter Series, I wanted to be as efficient as possible. I think I'm in the worst shape of my life right now, so I won't succeed on speed. I need to be efficient.

This park doesn't allow for off-trail work, but there's a big network of wooded trails. Which means that once you get off-kilter, it's bad.

Here's the rundown:

Start to #1: Didn't exit the gate with the best route, but it was workable. (I ran to the GO control and then up).

#1 to #2: I got to the right spot, but I couldn't spot the pit. I probably spent 10 seconds looking around for it. I had overrun it just a tad.

#2 to #3: Do you ever have those times when you think that you must have been abducted by aliens, or had a seizure, or some other unexplainable time losses? Yea, that was this leg. 3:42????? I lost 2 minutes here! This was, in my opinion, the trickiest control out there, within the network of smaller trails and in a flat, featureless area, so I had some hesitations at some trail junctions.

I also thought I turned at the wrong turn, so I backtracked 40 meters. I'm not used to 1:10000 maps for WIOL meets (even though I just ran on this scale a week ago), so I thought I'd run too far.

It seemed like I was off 90 degrees, but I decided to go with my gut, and head back down that trail. Turns out, my gut was right. I still can't fathom losing 2 minutes on this one, though. I was going to guess 1 minute.

#3 to #4 to #5 to #6: Nothing interesting here. I said hi to Ken somewhere in here.

#6 to #7: A sloppy exit of #6. I didn't see the eastern half of the trail junction from the control, so I thought maybe I missed the first trail and entered from the eastern one. So I backtracked out to the main trail. Turns out, I entered correctly, and that eastern trail junction was there, I just needed to wander over another 10m. This exit cost me 100m.

I saw the control on the fence really early, and I also saw blackberries, so I took the conservative approach from the trail to the NW. Turns out, I could have saved some time cutting to another fence corner and over. The map showed green, so I didn't try it. Only cost me maybe 25m, though.

#7 to #8: I lost maybe 1 minute here, due mainly to a map error. The map showed the intermittent trail junction just before the bend. So right before the bend, the woods look a little more open. Trail? Maybe? Didn't turn out to be one. I headed north and found it. Turns out, that trail junction was exactly on the bend.

#8 to #9 to #10 to #11 to #12 to #13 to #14 to Finish: Muddy trail running (and some uphill walking) and occasional punching.

Overall, I lost no more than 4 minutes out there, which is less than 10% of my time. It'll be interesting to see how some of the other not-so-fast orienteers did out there. Because I lost 4 minutes on some tricky controls on an otherwise easy, runner's course. At the two previous Winter Series meets, I've been about 20% behind Nikolay/Eric. I was about 26% back today. I wonder if that 6% will cost me some points.

My efficiency was pretty decent, except for that #3 control. Even if I didn't take ideal routes, I made decisions quickly and was moving a lot. I knew how I was going to exit things before I got there. And the #3 mistake, well, I've been in similar situations before that have cost me 5+ minutes, so I guess I made an "efficient" mistake. This was my worst performance of the Winter Series, but considering I didn't know the map, that's to be expected. I'm certainly happy with the overall result.

Just one more Winter Series event for me, and it's on a map I've been once before. Granted, I made a big 10-minute mistake out there last year. Hopefully, I can perform well. I've been really sharp ever since US Champs.

Hiking 1:20:00 [1]*** 4.5 km (17:47 / km)

Easy walk through the mud while picking up controls. I examined the control locations at #6 and #7 to see how I could have entered/exited better. I feel pretty silly on #6!

Note
2007 is done. Finally. 387 hours of overtime. Gina logged 385. I could have been up to 443 hours, but I was able to flex 56 hours instead of taking 7 vacation days. It's interesting to see how cyclical my overtime was, compared to Gina's more consistent OT accrual. Time will tell if 2008 will require even more.... sigh.
