Event: Anza Borrego Desert O-Fest

Orienteering race 2:02:48 [4]**** 9.05 km (13:34 / km)
shoes: Vasque Lightspeed
Anza Borrego: Day 1

Bobble at #4 (wandered from my bearing and didn't judge distance well)

Had to back out and relocate at #10. I missed my turn and took the next spur down, which led to the wrong canyon.

#11 was awesome. M gut said I was in the right spot, but my eyes were convinced that this canyon was too narrow to be the right one.

Took the wrong spur on #12, but it led me to the same spot, just a bit longer.

#15 was a really interesting leg that I nav'ed ok, but route choice was tricky and I lost time on a weird route.

Ran to the wrong GO control because I was tired. I even knew it was the wrong one because I could see it, but I ran up there anyway. Dumb.

Did ok on a course that was much more technical than two years ago.

Basketball 30:00 [3]
Everett Basketball League, Division 3
Win 52-29

I hadn't touched a basketball since last March/April, whenever that was. Sooo.... I was really rusty. I was 2 for 7 from the field (making only lay-ups) and an embarrassing 2 for 5 from the free throw line. Free! The one thing I've always counted on... I couldn't do.

We did win, which was really nice, as the team went completely winless last fall. Carlos had a great shooting day, and our opponents weren't very big. I did well on the rebounding end, which is what I was focusing on.

For the first time since I can ever remember, I got into foul trouble. I was whistled twice in the first 4 minutes, the first one being an extremely ticky-tack call (ref, that's standard post-defense!). And then, just a minute into the 2nd quarter, they credited a foul on me... that Thomas made. Basically, I only played 5 minutes in the first half. I wanted some exercise, so I ran laps around the gym. I played most of the second half.

Wednesday Jan 16

Note
New car is in Seattle!

But, I won't be able to pick it up until next Wednesday. The car won't be ready until Friday, and I'll be in California Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon. I have volleyball on Tuesday night. Wednesday it is!

ps. I need to whip up a quick OK bumper stick for it.

Volleyball 1:30:00 [1]
Seattle Co-ed B

Blah. What a weird night. Shannon was hurt, Simon was sick, Ryan had a doctor appt, so Kate and I found a random assortment of subs: Gina from Everett A-league, Jeff from softball who hadn't really played much, and since Sergio was AWOL during the first game, two of Jeff's friends joined.

We actually won that first game, but our opponents were pretty bad. After that, one guy left and Sergio took his place. We were really out of sync all night. Though, we did have a 20-15 lead over the best team... and then they called timeout and came back and won.

Between last night and tonight, I pretty much know what the biggest difference between my Tuesday and Wednesday teams, but I don't want to elaborate on that here...

Volleyball 1:20:00 [3]
Over the next 7 days, 6 of them will have training!

Volleyball - Everett Co-Ed A
0 wins, 4 losses

Breaking in the new team...

We were at a disadvantage because we had the opening round bye tonight, which means that we don't get the extended warm-up practice time, and our first opponent is already in rhythm. Our first opponent is the 3rd best team in the league, and we played respectably, but lost.

Our second pair of games was against the "caveman" team, who's the 4th best team. We were up 17-9 in the first game before collapsing, and lost the second one by a decent amount.

I was worried about our success this season, since we lost our three best players. However, I'm not worried anymore. The two new guys have lots of positive energy, so I think we're having a lot more fun out there. We're also really scrappy now, diving everywhere for balls. We also figured out a good rotation with setters and stuff, so we'll get into a good flow eventually (something that always seemed a bit off-kilter with the old team). The experience isn't there, as I have more Everett A-league experience (6 seasons), than the rest of the team combined (Matt has 3, Gina 2, Frankie and Tim 0). However, I think this team is greater than the sum of its parts.

Frankie is short, which is good, because he's a helluva setter. Wow. And Tim was a lot better (a former summer B-leaguer) than I thought he'd be at his first go. We need to work on our communication a bit, which isn't surprising, since we're adjusting to the team. But once we have that down, we should be ok.
