Orienteering 9:00 [3]*** 1.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: GoLite Spike Tail
I thought that I'd be clever. Today was Seattle Works Day, where 1500 young professionals did environmental community service throughout the city. The 250 people volunteering through Boeing-REACH were assigned Lincoln Park and we were going to meet there at 12pm.

So I decided to get there at 11:30am and run an old orienteering course from 2005. And, since it was going to be only about a 20 minute run, I figure that I'd try it without any ankle brace (I did wear my neoprene sleeve). So I started running. And about 8:50 into my run, I stepped on an exposed root (not a very big one, either) with my bad foot. I felt a weird pop, and then some pain. 10 seconds later, I decided that I was done, so I walked back to the car. Good thing I had leather work boots, so that I could keep it compressed and stable.

The good: I don't think I ruptured/tore anything. The pop felt more like a popping a knuckle than tearing a tendon/ligament. I can bear full weight on it, and it seems like I have full range of mobility...

The bad: It's really tender in the area where it's been tender for the past couple of months. Just more so. It's confusing, because I thought it was tender there only from the bone contusions. However, whatever I did today was nothing related to a bone contusion, so I don't know what's going on.

Luckily, I have my 8-week follow-up with the orthopedic doctor on Wednesday, so I'll know more very, very soon.

Seattle Works Day 2008
Lincoln Park

We attacked and pulled out a bunch of invasive species. Namely Himalayan Blackberry, English Ivy, and Holly. It's kinda fun to go out there and avenge the blackberries that routinely remove my skin and blood while orienteering.

Lots of pulling and tugging, plus digging and chopping.

I was in Group 6, and we pretty much turned a dark green section of the map into more of a medium-to-light green. It was fun. Now the map needs updating. :-)

Note
Vampire Weekend = excellent
Fleet Foxes = good, I need to get it back from my roomies to listen to it more
Hayden = good
Grand Archives = too mellow for the times I've tried to listen

Volleyball 2:00:00 [3]
Volleyball open gym.

Gina and I met Jasen, our new teammate for the summer season. He's really good. Heidi wasn't able to make it, so we don't know exactly how team chemistry will work, but it should be good. For the purposes of open gym, we played with Mike, an older guy with experience, and Kiran, a young Indian guy with a wicked serve.

We played two games against Fred's team and split, and three games against Matt's new team, and swept.

My serves were money tonight. Felt really good!

Softball 1:15:00 [1]
Played the #1 team in the league, and we laid down, losing 13-2. As a team, we batted 9-for-30, which isn't so hot in slow pitch softball. Our #3 through #6 hitters were a combined 1-for-12. One of our opponents got two "inside the park" homers via a comedy of errors. Sigh.

Individually, I did pretty well. I was 3-for-3 with three singles, and I scored our second run after sliding into third, and then booking it home. I pitched for three innings, with mixed results. When I pitch, their best hitters fly out rather easily (I actually struck out their lead-off hitter), but their bottom hitters get hits easily. When Mike pitches, the big hitters hit big, and the weak hitters get out. Weird.
