Running 16:28 [2]1.5 km (10:59 / km)
shoes: GoLite Spike Tail
I shadowed Gina's dad on the beginner course at Lord Hill. We went over the basics during the uphill walk to the start, and I gave him some tips upon receiving the map. I pretty much let him do the driving after that. I gave him some tips about simplifying the map and large attackpoints. He had a little trouble with #6 because he got pulled over by another large tree, but without me pointing it out, he figured it out. He easily won the beginner course!
Orienteering race 26:26 [4]*** 2.7 km (9:47 / km)
spiked:12/15c shoes: GoLite Spike Tail
Ran the sprint race at Lord Hill, and I had a pretty good run to finish 4th.

Spiked #1.
Lost 30 seconds with a hesitation on the way to #2.
Flew down the hill and spiked #3.
Lost 50 seconds on #4 as I ran back and forth in front of the access before seeing it.
Spiked #5, #6, #7, and #8.
I was confronted with crossing a deep marsh on the way to #9. I bailed a bit to the west, only to find a similar knee-deep crossing through the creek. I got wet.
Spiked #10 and #11.
Decided to attack #12 straight on, which involved crossing a knee-deep marsh and scrambling up some rocks. Good route. Then I slowed down as I went up the hill.
Lost 30 seconds exiting #13, thinking that the cliff may be passable. Ha! I had to backtrack.
Spiked #14 and #15.
I had a rather slow run-in, which is uncharacteristic of me. Zbynek got me by 15 seconds here, and Gina was only one second slower.

26:26, 1:50 lost.
Orienteering race 41:00 [3]***
Short Advanced at Lord Hill...

Aside from cutting in too early on #2, I pretty much spiked the entire course. However, I heavily tweaked my ankle twice, the first of which involved me falling into a bed of nettles and laying there for a minute while the pain in ankle subsided. The second time was more of an ankle subluxion, and after that, I really wasn't able to run with much speed.

Other 3:00 [2]
Random old guy in a truck pulls up to me at the gas station asking if I'd help him and his brother move a truck canopy around. I say yes, and turns out, the guys live on my block. Helped them lift the thing up and over a ledge and behind the shed. They offered me $10, but hey, it's a neighborly thing, so I couldn't accept. I was reminded by the old Boy Scout slogan (not the motto).

This was just after getting home from the doctor. Basically, I need to become a "neurotic stretcher" to get this thing healed faster!

Big Finn Hill Park: Course #3
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/183811

By far the most successful run I've had at this meet. Last year was the un-sprintly sprint plus the horribly set and mapped longer course. Two years ago was my knee injury. Three years ago was my slowest orienteering pace, which still stands.

What was also fun is that Roger started 2 minutes behind me, so I was properly motivated to push it hard.

I got fenced in on the way to #1, and coupled with jumping into the wrong trail first, I probably lost a minute on Roger at the first one. But then I spiked #2 through #5, though #5 seemed a bit off. Miscounted my trails to #6, but looking at the GPS log, I didn't screw it up too bad... I just cut in too early. When I was leaving, I saw Roger approaching. I figured that he was still ahead of me in total time.

I knew #7 was going to be tricky, considering the sketchiness of the trails in this park (and it's not like you can navigate off-trail instead), but I seemed to hit this one spot on after a few hesitations to make sure that I didn't get sucked down the wrong trail. To #8, the huge trail that shortcuts wasn't there in real life, so I went way around on this one, but had decent speed. I got pulled over by the bike jump area again this year on the way to #9. Lost a few seconds here.

I had a good run in, and had some fun with the Tennisberg kids here.

I ended up beating Roger by 36 seconds, but finished about 7 minutes back of Will and Eric.

Orienteering race 27:55 [3]*** 2.9 km (9:38 / km)

Big Finn Hill Park: Course #2
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/183812

Since Course #2 didn't have any common controls, and it was 2.9km, I decided to do it. I actually found this one to be more of a challenge than the longer course.

The forest trail to #1 went into a wall of blackberries, so I had to back out. Also, it wasn't apparent from the map that #1 was only visible from the backside. I completely overran #2, which wasn't on a rootstock at all. It was buried a bit in some more blackberries.

I decided to take a weird route to #3 for some reason. I ran into Angela on this leg, and she had no idea where she was (not a hard thing to do with this map). She gave up on #2. I hit #3 without too much trouble, and nailed #4. Nailed #5, but I saw that one while out on the longer course. The map was really sketchy around #6, so I lost a few minutes here, along with Jim.

I spiked #7, #8, and #9, but I didn't feel like pushing it very hard. Another good run in.

Volleyball 2:00:00 [2]
Volleyball

Went 3-3, with a new team, which is good. Two of our wins were against the team that split from us from the spring season, which felt good. I played really well during the first 4 games, and then I struggled mightily against the final team. In our last game, I was serving with our opponents having two match points, and I was able to ace them three times such that we had our own match point. And then it I served it into the top of the net and it bounced on our side. One more inch of height, and it would have rolled on their side and we would have won. Oh well.

Monday Jun 9

Note
Limped around the softball field. My ankle feels about how it did 3 months ago (before the Capitol Hill Street Scramble). I don't think I lost 3 months worth of healing (maybe 3 weeks?), but it's certainly regressed.

Hopefully I'll get a good understanding of what's going on at the doctor on Wednesday. Hopefully I can go orienteering for the next two weekends. If I can make it through Tahoe, I'll basically get a month off of terrain running before the big ones: Cascade Goat, Forest Frenzy and US Champs on three consecutive weekends.
