| Tahoe 3-Day: Long
Went to the first control, couldn't find it. Looped around the entire area twice, bouncing off the trail and an old rusted car before finding it. I was within 30m of the flag twice... no luck. I lost 10 minutes here. I bobbled the second control. I aimed off too far on the third control (what I wanted to do, but not that much). Overshot the fourth and had to back in.... At that point, I was 0-for-4, and tired from the previous day, my ankle wasn't super happy, and I think I was starting some blisters, so I mentally just didn't care anymore after that. I walked a lot, just because. And then i navigated through 9 very well. Duh, because I was going so slow! My initial plan to #10 was good (to the right), but the white had a ton of downfall, so I adjusted over to the stream and reservoir, which added distance compared to taking the trail (to the left). #13 was the water stop that was attacked by the bear. I got really confused leaving that control, I was about 90deg off. So I went the wrong way on a trail. And then I corrected, and decided to cut a corner to make up some time. Ha! I never really cut a corner, I just kept wandering up the wrong hillside. And then I corrected again to the road. And then I thought I was exactly where I wanted to be, but I wasn't (too far north). I ended up seeing this huge cliff thing that was just off the map, and I was confused by it until I went up to it and saw the road underneath (road was the map edge). The confusion at #14 continued through #15. I was fine after that. Yeah, I was realllllly slow. Last place amongst finishers. 20 seconds back of someone else and 3 minutes back of Rex. I wasn't even mad or frustrated with my performance. It was "meh". I think because I had two really good races earlier, it was easier to swallow a poor one.

| Tahoe 3-Day: Middle
Probably my best A-meet day, considering the terrain. I've run a bit faster at Anza Borrego and Buena Vista, but those venues are a lot more open. Burton Creek is very vague with mushy vegetation, not my style at all. I got pretty lucky on Saturday, and back to normal on Sunday.... #1 was super long, but I hit it spot on. Same with #2. Aimed off on #3 and came in through the cliffs. I planned to aim off on #5, but I screwed up and headed exactly straight for the control. Lucky! My only big mistake (~4 minutes) was to #10. I had a handrail for most of it, but I got distracted by Eddie passing me, and I cut in too early and was looking at the wrong boulders just around the bend from where I needed to be. The good thing is that those 4 minutes didn't cost me a place. I finished 9th, which I'm extremely pleased with. I beat Rex on the sprint and middle, so I won the weekend series already!

| Tahoe 3-Day: Sprint
Pretty good race. Spiked 1 and 2, a slight hesitation on 3, spiked 4 and 5, slight hesitation on 6, spiked 7, lost a minute on 8 because I misinterpreted the streamered line through the woods as a trail on the map. I spiked everything else after that, except for 13, where my plan was to go up two staircases and turn right. However, there was an unmapped staircase, so I got really confused. I navigated this one according to plan eventually, but I lost probably 30 seconds standing there like an idiot. I was two minutes back of second place. Eddie waxed everyone, finishing two minutes ahead of second. Oyvind had a killer race, too, finishing over a minute ahead of me. I got him at the Lord Hill sprint, and he got me here.

| 1) Wow, really sore today:
Left ankle: duh Right knee: massive bruise from an ungraceful volleyball dive Upper right back/shoulder/neck: I slept on it funny the other night and then played hard last night 2) Despite last night, my ankle did well on Monday at softball. I played without a brace and I slid into 3rd base. 3) Rest day today and tomorrow for the big weekend in Tahoe. And then likely 11 days of rest (for my body, not from work) starting the 23rd when I'll be in South Carolina. My joints and stuff should feel pretty good for the Street Scramble on July 4th. 4) My 2008 album list has jumped to nine! Bonnie Prince Billy - Lie Down In The Light Sera Cahoone - Only As The Day Is Long Coldplay - Viva La Vida Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes The Grand Archives - Grand Archives Hayden - In Field & Town Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend Plus the Juno Soundtrack I've pretty much picked all of these up in the last few weeks, so I'm not familiar with many of them, except for Vampire Weekend, which is probably on track for #1 on my list for the year... long way to go, though.

| I'm really hating my ankle today. I couldn't jump at volleyball today, so my jump serves were all over the place and I couldn't spike to save my life. The bum ankle just made the footwork of the spike approach off, so I kept hitting it into the net.
On match point of the last game, I went up for a spike, but I compressed/subluxated my ankle on the squat before the jump. So my jump became a half jump, and I probably hit it into the net, and I crumpled to the floor in pain. And everyone else thought I was laughing, so they were laughing, too. And then they got really worried... but they shouldn't be worried because... This now the 4th time in 11 days that my ankle has done this, so I know the routine. It really hurts for about 90 seconds, but after that, I can walk around almost normal, a few minutes later, it's like it was before it ever happened. It was still pretty tender, but after the injury timeout, I was able to play one more point to end the game. Just like on Saturday, after laying in the nettles for about 90 seconds, I was able to get up and keep going... (until I did it again 10 minutes later... then I was done) I just wish that I had more flexibility. It's been almost 5 months since the injury, and my mobility hasn't changed in 3 months. The doctor says that I should just stretch all the time, and for the past week, I've been stretching while brushing my teeth, while in the shower, while in the car, at the office, standing around. I massage my sore spot during meetings and after activity. Granted, this more aggressive stretching plan has only been going for a week, but it still seems like my ankle is compressing barely past neutral. I've got a long way to go. The weird part about all of this is that my orienteering is better. At least my results back that up. In 2005, I was, on average, in the top 39% in the Ultimate O race results. In 2006, I was in the top 32%. In 2007, I was in the top 27%. This year, I've averaged a top 16% result so far. The total amount of runners per race has remained pretty much the same all three years, so I don't think this is a result of having a bunch of slower people show up this year.
| Volleyball 1:20:00 [2] | ||
| Volleyball, week #2.
Lost 4, won 0. Played two well-played games against the best team in the league. A lot of fun. And then we fell apart against the next team, giving them a 10-2 lead that at one point was 17-7. However, we came back to force a tie at 20-20 and again at 23-23. We had game points at 24-23, 25-24, and 26-26, but I hit a spike into the net at 26-26, so we lost (games are capped at 27 due to time). We didn't play well during the last game either. Jasen wasn't on, I was kinda gimpy, so we didn't have a whole lotta firepower. Oh well. I've got three weeks off volleyball starting now.

| 1) I found a schilling the other day where I parked my car at Gina's. An Austrian one from 1986. I was in Austria in 1985...
2) Driving on Winona the other day, there was a blue Honda Fit coming in the opposite direction. The driver waved at me. I waved back. I figured that there was a coterie of Honda Fit drivers out there (especially the blue ones), but this was the first time I've experienced it. I think I'll start waving at every blue Honda Fit I see from now on. 3) The landscapers finally came, and the yard looks awesome! 4) Coldplay is out today, so I think I'll go pick it up, along with the new Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Sera Cahoone. 5) I need a scanner. I thought I'd be clever and just take photos of my O maps and overlay the GPS logs.... but it doesn't match up because of the lens distortion.

| Softball 1:15:00 [1] | ||
| Played the worst team in the league, and we won 11-8. Our defense shut them down in the first four innings, as we took a 4-0 lead. They tied it in the 5th, but then we countered with 7 runs in the 5th, too. They made it mildly interesting in the last inning, scoring four more.
I was 1-for-3 at the plate, but I got the ball rolling in our big inning with a hit, RBI, and run scored. I pitched the final two innings, nothing special. I made one play in the field at pitcher. We're now 3-3 on the season.
