Saturday Oct 17 #

Week 2, Saturday

Had an early night last night and slept through till 6.30 so banked a solid 9hrs. Coffee and a bagel with avocado for breakfast and dropped wife at work before heading to Pentlands. Started at Flotterstone for an hour out and back.

Misty day with little visibility and a cold wind chill with the rain on and off. Never too heavy but ground was boggy and greasy and tentative descents ended up causing core temperature to drop quite a bit.

Felt good on the first climb but coughing up a bit. Some initial tightness at bottom of calves and top of Achilles but figured this was just a factor going straight into a 10-15min climb. After the first top I was moving better and pressed on. Went over my left ankle on one of the muddy descents and face first into the heather. Initially sore but could still put weight on it so ran on.

The next few tops passed quite quickly and actually lost track of where I was. Descended West Kip and hit the drove road before realising where I was. Maurten gel at 55mins and then turned at 58mins.

On the way back I added in another top but again, fairly uneventful on the way back. Hiking a lot of the climbs today to keep the intensity low. Felt good on the last couple of descents and back to the car at 1:56.

No swelling on ankle after the run which is a relief and full ROM.

Friday Oct 16 #

Week 2, Friday

Slept like a baby - early to bed and woke up before 6:15 alarm. Quick half cup of coffee and out the door. Legs felt good this morning. Took a couple of km to warm up but felt fluid and was moving well. Did 4km at a slightly higher intensity and picked up the pace. Guts weren't great and ended up spending 5-10 mins looking for a discreet bush. Felt fine afterwards and after 4th quicker km then eased off to finish.

Tightness in calves has gone again and back has eased off.

Thursday Oct 15 #

Week 2, Thursday

Shocking night sleep with the dogs up at 3am. Struggled to get back to sleep. Nodded off and bagged about 7ish hours total but groggy to start. Quick coffee and then out the door.

Took forever to get going and calves really tight but eased off after 7km. Easy effort and just ticking along.

Tuesday Oct 13 #

Week 2, Tuesday

Woke up to alarm at 6am feeling well rested but groggy. Snoozed for 20mins. Legs felt okay, slight stiffness in lower back. Dressed and straight out the door for an easy 30 to turn the legs. Road loop around Duddingston.

Slow start and back eased off after a couple of km. Soaked by the end again but an easier day ticked off. Will rest tomorrow as that is now 7 days on the bounce. Getting back into the groove though.

Monday Oct 12 #

Week2, Monday

Day off work today and intended long lie with alarm set for 7am. Woke up well rested at 6:30 and took the dogs out to the garden. Coffee in bed before getting ready to head out. Toilet before leaving and stomach behaved today. Pissing it down so proper jacket weather.

Legs felt good after first week back to some sort of running. Sunday's 30min run felt like a slog but getting moving today felt pretty good. Run up Blackford Hill at the start felt comfortable and just tried to maintain a comfortable effort. Ran through the nature reserve and up to the Braids. Slushy bog fest trails made it slippy but good fun. Gradual inclines felt good, steeper part (going AC) resorted to hiking. Downhill was good and moving well. God knows who wants to play golf in that weather!

Lap 2 was good. Maurten gel at 50mins - went down well but slight stitch on the last downhill part. Proper flooded and some landowner has put a wooden post in the middle of the line I take - RUDE!

Through the park on the way back and back after about 90mins of running. Rooibos and toast for breakfast before going for brunch with the Mrs and some reading to do for course work.
