Week 3, Saturday

What a shit storm! First hour and a half in a 40mph headwind and driving rain. Cold and tough going. 3 pairs of gloves weather!

Slept okay but later to bed than normal with wife on the back shift. Up at 7 to have coffee and a bagel for breakfast and then out to the Pentlands for 9ish. Wish I started later as weather okay now.

Tough going on the climbs on the way out and even on the flats I was barely hitting 6min/km. Some respite down by the farm and rain subsided at the turn after 90mins. Way back in went pretty smoothly. Ran whole climb from Castlelw car park which I haven’t done in some time. Total time from bottom to top was around 12mins so happy with that. Slippy on the last 2 descents but back in one piece.

Maurten gel at 45 and 90mins. Some water at 90mins. Needed at least one additional gel.

No aches or niggles today and legs moving well. Slipped and jarred my back slightly but seems okay now that I’ve finished.

Week 3, Friday

Long lie and a lazy morning before working from the house. Slept like a log and woke up feeling recharged.

Ran after work and headed to Braids at around 5ish. Had a bar at around 4 and energy levels felt a lot better than the midweek run at Arthurs Seat. Ran up to the Braids through the field and then first climb round the golf course was a nice steady effort, running all the way and around 7-8mins in duration. Down and around the bottom bit before another climb. Felt good on the second rep. Light was fading at the top so turned and ran down the same way and back through the field. Felt strong and ticking along on the super runnable descent. Time to refuel before the Pentlands tomorrow.

Week 3, Thursday

Up and out this morning. Good night sleep. Dropped wife at work and ran from the city centre on regular loop. Stiff to begin with but eased into an easy run. No niggles or tightness after the run.

Week 3, Wednesday

Up at 6, dogs walked, breakfast, wife to work then end to end day with 3 meetings in 3 different shops. Too much time in the car and finished by 6, car handover and got a quick run in at an upbeat tempo.

Legs felt good throughout the day and no tightness or foot pain niggles. A lot of uphills on the road in 7km; Calton Hill, Mound and staircase up to the Castle before a lap of the Meadows and home. Felt comfortable cardiovascularly and legs turning well. Only 30mins but glad to squeeze it in and finally get sitting down.

Week 3, Tuesday

Plenty of sleep and up early to walk the dogs. Not sure they were too grateful in the torrential rain! Lazy morning and spent a good bit of time working on the tightness in my left calf. Foot pain gone. Mundane day working from home but headed out for a run at 5pm.

Headed to Arthurs Seat for the first time in a while. Very greasy and slippy underfoot which made for slow descents. Legs felt good throughout but generally weary. Not sure I ate enough throughout the day and could have done with a gel. Feels like my right ankle needs to crack or click into place. Slight seized feeling across the talus that needs released.

Week 3, Monday

Opted for a lazy morning before working from home all day. Good night sleep and woke up feeling well rested but some stiffness in the legs.

Finished work sharp and got out for an easy hour. Pissing with rain and pretty windy. Got moving fine and an easy loop round Arthurs Seat on the road. After first climb noticed achy feel in left PF. 4th run in Clifton Edge and 4th time noticing similar feeling in the midfoot. Think that will be their last outing. Persisted for the rest of the run. Nipple chafage towards the end.

Legs good and massage ball on the foot for the rest of the evening. Strange with Hoka road shoes (+Challenger) as I have had similar before but never in the Torrents.

Week 2, Sunday

Legs felt battered this morning and ankle a little tender when walking about this morning. Lazy morning and big breakfast.

Had planned to run on local trails today but opted for a flatter road run to not put any additional strain through left ankle. Ran easy up to the canal (4km) and then picked up the pace for a 3km out and back. Felt good and was ticking along nicely. Near miss with an oncoming cyclist and she was nearly in the water but otherwise a good uninterrupted run. Feeling good after second week back at it.
