Orienteering race 1:03:00 [3] *** 8.0 km (7:53 / km)
spiked:14/18c shoes: X-Talon 212
Another long sprint course.
First the positives:
- Hadn't run for 3 weeks but felt decent and hips handled nicely
- Becca did great on Orange!
- Wonderful time w/ the kids on White course
- Gavin was doing good job deciding how to get to the next control
- There wasn't 2 feet of snow this year!
- Was reading the subtle topography well
Now the negatives:
- I need to get back in shape--not running for 3 weeks is not good!
- Got confused on the way to #6 seeing unmapped stuff, and I had bad bearing discipline
- Sloppy in a few areas.
- Should have looked at my clue sheet on #11... I was looking for erosion gulley/ditch, not a pit, so I literally stood right next to control w/o seeing it in the ditch and then started searching around not seeing it in ditch because it wasn't in a ditch, it was in a pit. Costly mistake.
- Got a cactus needle in my foot on the way to #14, lots of pain, had to stop and take shoe off, find needle, remove, put shoe back on. Lots of lost time there.
- #15 was located in the wrong place! I got to south side of marsh looking all over for it, then went to west side, still nothing... walked all over and swore I was in the control circle but it was nowhere to be found. So then I doubted myself and went further west to other set of trees, still nothing, re-traced, and then I saw the control *across* the marsh from me on the *NORTH* side of the marsh which is completely opposite of where it was mapped! So I trotted straight through the wet marsh and continued on.
- After fiascos at #14 and #15 I was pretty sapped and just made a leisurely finish.
CY18 control goal count = 422
