Scottish relays @Roseisle - Men’s open (CA gaffle)

Great fun racing. Was running with Dan Spencer up until 14 and then Alastair Pedley for most of it after. Nav processes were not too good day. Baring to hill and rummaging/guessing where planner would put it rather than reading the map.

Stinker at #14 where I got really confused at all the extra wind blow and forestry rides that weren’t mapped and stopped too early. Took a long time to relocate as I was making the rides that weren’t mapped fit to the tracks. Turns out Dan had the same gaffle as me so I should’ve just followed him for such a weird vague control. Lost Pedley when I went into the green too early for some stupid reason (thought I had somehow got to a right angle veg boundary when it was still straight). Only realised I was in the wrong place when Pedley came flying past below me still in the lovely white forest. Probably was rushing to get away from him.

Scottish Champs M18 - 3rd, 2nd scot

Very pleased with the position. Couldn’t get to sleep last night (watch says 5hrs). Becoming a pre big race theme. I think I worked it up in my head too much though, just had to do my job. Was happy with my processes, execution wasn’t quite clinical enough however, some silly muck ups when I was close to the control. Clear processes meant I was very good at wiping these mistakes from the brain which was good. Ah so happy though, big relief.

#2 - Such a short control that I didn’t bother getting on compass and couldn’t find it, had to relocate off the track.
#3 - Stopped too early and was on the wrong hill.
#6 - Too high, same problem as 2.
#7 - Funny one. Was on the right line of knolls but saw some guy to the west of it having a wee. I personally take my wees when I’m at a control where I know where I am, so stopped mearkatting and ran right past my control. Poor relocation because it was all the same in there.
#12 - Control potentially on the wrong marsh?? Was about to run past it because I was sure it wasn’t mine but luckily checked the code.
#17 - Started to keep an eye over my shoulder for James here who started 12 mins behind me. Didn’t see the flipping gorse bush which was apparently very distinct. Meant I was fumbling about in the rough open with Keith Brown and Ian Maxwell for a bit.
#18 - Over cautious
#19 - Some mtb guy did a road gap right over my head. Was pretty cool. #rad.
#22 - Started to bonk. Took a red line route which meant a lot of gorse and shrub bashing. Finding it hard to stay on my feet.
#23 - Cautious to get the right mtb track. I was a bit too far north west. Decked it just before punching. Bashed knee. Swollen. Ouch.

Actually felt really good for all of this and really enjoyed it taking it easy. Started sweating a bit early but cooled off in the haar. Only started to flag a bit at braids which I would say is fairly successful. Had 2 oat flapjack bar things, 3 clif energy blocks and 750ml of water which is exactly half of what I brought with me. A lot less than the last time I ran 30km but that was in 20+ degree heat.

No blisters or anything and no sharp pains afterwards. Think I’ll be good as new after a good sleep.

I think I’m going to self diagnose myself as having had some form of heat stroke both days of the weekend, Sunday slightly worse. That would explain the weird lingering sick feeling and tiredness. Also would explain the high HR for pretty low speed, and I had a bit of a weird/uncommon headache early on on the Sunday. I had the low appetite bit too due to the sickness, which also kind of explains why I felt so physically empty especially later on on Saturday. Meh the actual nav was sturdy when I was less drowsy, so all is not lost. Just the pace was so poor, especially the middle because I really felt the sick bit.

Hopefully if it is this and not a bigger more complicated issue then I can be sure that if I hydrate well on the days leading up to the competition and keep cool where I can, I wont have as many problems when it comes to race pace.

First time back in spikes in a year and probably close to the quickest I’ve run ever. Sub £20 spikes were humbling the £150+ cloudspikes. Most alive I’ve felt in ages.
