Note
(rest day)

Enforced rest day, not from wildly celebrating the rugby result but due to a full day of traveling.

8 AM

X-C skiing 3:45:00 [1] 25.76 km (8:44 / km) +442m 8:03 / km

A treat for out last ski, over to Sjusjoen to watch Birkebeinerne. Saw the first couple of hundred through (surprisingly spread out) before heading on a loop to the north-east (minus John and Ollie). Another stunning sunny day, but body in need of a bit of a rest, especially the arms.

X-C skiing 5:45:00 [1] 36.31 km (9:30 / km) +452m 8:57 / km

Sunny ski in the hills (or rather lack of) to the north. Early start as a bit of a drive, also a bit cool, even without wind chill it didn't get above -10 all day. However it was gloriously sunny and the wind was actually hardly noticeable. Very easy terrain on freshly groomed trails with next to no one else around. Little bonus loop at the end to head to a summit, from which the long distance views were amazing. Top day skiing.

X-C skiing 6:30:00 intensity: (5:20:00 @1) + (55:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) 42.51 km (9:10 / km) +736m 8:27 / km

Completely different today, snowed most of the day with a bitingly cold wind. great route though, over to Sjusjoen down-hill slope from Nordseter. Serious wind-chill in places but all the more memorable for it. Also stunning snow as you could see the shape of every crystal. Sjusjoen cafe not a patch on Nordseter, being both more expensive (£24 for a pizza) and not as good cake.

Left the group once we got back to the cars and skied back to the cabin on my own. Snow stopped by now and in the shelter of the wind. Really enjoyed this.

X-C skiing 3:15:00 [1] 15.69 km (12:26 / km) +287m 11:23 / km

Morning ski, again from the cabin as there was still no sign of the snow-plough. Lovely day again, though getting colder. Half of this was on a narrow trail that hadn't been pisted recently. Lots of fun but very hard to stop and turn. One wipe out when Emma went off in front of me.
7 PM

X-C skiing 1:30:00 [1] 8.22 km (10:57 / km) +196m 9:47 / km

Aim was a night ski up Nevelfjell to see the northern lights. failed on both accounts but had a brilliant ski. The off piste ski to the top was icy and windy, so we abandoned before the top. The pisted trails down were great fun though. Lots and lots of clothes on, stayed warm but wouldn't have wanted to be standing around too long.

X-C skiing 5:30:00 [1] 34.88 km (9:28 / km) +757m 8:32 / km

No snow-plough yet so back down our private trail (now named MD-Ski). Cracking day of blue skies and little wind. Back up to Nordseter for a cake via another stop at the supermarket in Sjusjoen. Had my second (un-pisted) fall of the week when I failed to see a snow drift that Nick had just told me about...

X-C skiing 2:30:00 [1] 11.51 km (13:02 / km) +316m 11:28 / km

15cm of snow last night so not able to get the cars out, therefore had to ski from the cabin. However, as the nearest ski trail was 1.5km away it made for some trail bashing. Good fun but snow so deep it was hard to get up when you inevitably ended up in it. Back to Nordseter cafe for more cake.
1 PM

X-C skiing 2:30:00 [1] 18.61 km (8:04 / km) +314m 7:26 / km

Group split after lunch and Nick, Clare and I headed to Sjusjoen to find a supermarket. Eventually found it (complete with rows of x-c skis outside!). Really fun trip back, much of which along a narrow un-pisted trail, didn't notice the best part of 10kg of shopping on my back either. Worn off wax at the end made for very difficult back up the trail we forged this morning. (Ended up getting back before the other group as they took an accidental detour onto the Olympic tracks...).
