Orienteering race 42:03 [5] *** 5.26 km (8:00 / km) +205m 6:41 / km
ahr:166 max:178 spiked:11/17c slept:5.5 shoes: Low Top O-spikes

Day 1 at Umstead SP. Rough late night bus ride, but we were able to sleep in a bit. Nice to see familiar faces at the meet (Brendan, Ross, Sam, Eric, etc.) Consciously tried to take the early part of the race easy to get back into racing (also tried to emphasize this to the cadets, with pretty good success). Had some consistent problems coming out of controls on rough compass...5 controls I came out of about 30 degrees off. Another indicator that I really need to do some compass skill training.

Skiing (Downhill) 1:40:00 [1]

Went to the slope after dinner. It was some loose ice on top of solid ice, so the skiing was definitely the choppiest of the season so far. Really had to pay attention to what you were doing, but I felt it in my legs a lot more than usual.

Running tempo 49:21 [3] 6.0 mi (8:14 / mi)
ahr:148 slept:7.5 weight:184lbs shoes: Saucony 3D Grid Hurricane (Blu

Did the "Shortest, Fastest, Safest" presentation with O-Team. Really hard to tell what they took away from it, besides some guy ranting and raving for 1/2 hour. I think the practical exercise (using a master-type map to do a bunch of C-A-R analysis while running with a partner) was the real cincher, but I should have overridden Zach and done a more centralized execution, since I think some people ended up just going back to their rooms or going for a run with nothing more than a map in their hand. I should have shown them what "right" looks like, rather than just instruct them what right looks like.
I ended up matched with Brad H. and we went to Wash. Gate, Lusk Res., Thayer Gate, S. Dock and home at a decent (but not excessive) pace...hard enough to force some difficulty to the route analysis. He's got a pretty mature view of route choice, although he tends to fixate quickly on one choice, rather than consider a viable alternative...good for a race situation, but not ideal for an analysis drill.

Gym (Exercise Ball Routine) 15:00 [1]

Finally got my act together and did a quick routine after putting Anna to bed. Tomorrow night, I hope to do a balance board routine.

Running long 1:21:20 [4] 11.0 mi (7:24 / mi)
ahr:150 slept:8.0 weight:183lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (Lititz)

Woke up Saturday with a that dry feeling in my throat that indicates I am dehydrated or about to get sick, so I kept putting off my long run waiting for it to go away, but it never did, so this morning when I woke up (and it was the same), I decided I'd go out anyway. I went out Wash. Gate and then onto 218, making all the way to Cornwall and back today. There were only a couple of spots of ice on the road, and only about 10-12 rocks down on the road (conceivably over the last week, so the odds of getting hit by one rock per day I figured were pretty small). Saw one other runner coming up from Cornwall. Pretty pleasant run. Was a little short on time when I came back, so I switchbacked up the hill...low road, then Palazzo's street, then Sesame Street, then Connor Drive.
