back from moon-gazing from the hot-tub, looking up at cedar boughs thru the bedroom skylight, & watching deer from the livingroom window (stags pee in a squat position, just like the does - how's that for AOWN). Some chocolate made its appearance, also cherry tarts and fruitcake. No hats though. Two glasses water so far today, did usual holiday dehydration gig which must be remedied.

stationary bike 10:00 [1] 1.4 mi (7:09 / mi)

went down and did the stat bike again, 10 minutes so far OK, an hour after. Walked with Gypsy for third time today, she is getting co-ordinated enuf that soon I'll be able to log sensible 0.8km loops with her, which I am lookin forward to. She is now passed out in front of fire, I've drunk one more glass, tepid this time, & have done most of meal-planning for next week form Hawaiian cook book- kalua pig, 'ahi, a hawaiian-Jewish vegetarian pasta, and I forgot what else. Beef stew from freezer for dinner.

uh-oh. someone brought home two pounds of chocolates from the office.

Yellow Dog Yoga 15:00 [1]

fullon Puppy Yoga - nothing like doing shalabhasana focussing totally on tummy, butt, and breath squeezing down into the floor & then puppy boards you at the waist, prowls up the spine, grooms yer head for a minute, and then settles down for a nap in the nice dipped shoulder-blade area. Keeps ya real. too much chocolate for breakfast makes you feel sick for a while. Three glasses water, some tepid.

stationary bike 5:00 [2] 0.75 mi (6:40 / mi)

went down and tried out bike. OW. It hurts my hips (joints? not sure), tummy, and top of legs. Does it help butt at all? Felt like it was just getting sat on. See how 5 minutes settles in as initial data point. Actually no more data for a week as I am mostly packing today for week offline, off the continent and deep into the rain-forest serenity of Seido-En, cheaper than a flight to Japan, and without the inconvenience of jetlag. But I'll be walking & yoga-ing, doing my music & calligraphy, sleeping in a tatami room, hot-tubbing with the chickadees (AOWN?), and occasionally drinking chilled muscat with my parents and favorite husband. Yes!

swimming 15:00 [1]

Lulled by combination of laundry machine & Here's to You on CBC radio, puppy is doing alarming Dead-Dog head loll out of her basket so I whisk off to swim - tried going in right after shower, but it is still freezing, and even when I adapt & sense it as tepid & fun, my body has started shivering about 10 minutes early. Oh well, I still love swimming, when I have dreams of flying, its always actually swimming. Had the pool to myself so there was much snorting and splashing.

Yellow Dog Yoga 10:00 [1]

did stretches etc after swimming - I can do full warrior one in hottub, falling over right after every time, fun! And when I do cobra in the water, I can feel my breath lifting my body & letting it down.
In celebration of water, O-food is salmon, Jacques Pepin's "a l'orientale" preparation (heheh, a french interpretation of asian flavors on a west coast fish). I also have half a parsnip & about a tablespoon of frozen peas. hmmmm...

two glasses water. O-food, very O & vegan tonight - Szechuan tofu & green beans, w/ a complete stylistic non-sequitor of a new test-version of Christmas twice-baked yams made with almond oil instead of butter. Once more, Dragonfly is my hapless test-subject, and sometimes those tests can be happy-less esp. those involving blue cheese and pasta. May try for yoga tonight, or bike. Or not. I notice I am doing lotsa (well for me) uneven footwork to keep up w/ puppy investigations, before you know it I will be trotting cross-country like some kind of orienteer & then what wlll happen to my Orienteering Chair? Ankles pleased and proud with how they are coping with puppy-associated proprioreceptive challenges.

Yellow Dog Yoga 20:00 [1]

getting good mobility on my left supine twist, where before there was none - dunno what good that does me but whatever...

walking 10:00 [1]
rhr:56 slept:7.5 weight:62kg

R hip giving tiny twinges so maybe not so much trotting about today - just over to store thru woods - city guys are pretty much done cleaning up the wrack & ruin from the recent storms- some of the feral cherries came down, but hopefully that'll be even prettier in the spring as that grove is opened up a bit. 2 glasses water. O-food is mujadarah dressed up with all the lil t'ings just piled on top (in an attractive way). And I dunno what else. Christmas light counts increasing daily - from our bedroom window - Sat. night, 35; Sun. night night 45; Mon. night 49.

Yellow Dog Yoga 17:00 [1]

Been doing a few minutes of range of motion, yoga, and remedial "strength" stuff each evening for the last few days and decided to log today's. I think I discovered an isometric for my triceps (anti-"old-lady-jelly-arm")- trying to lift the sofa while lying on my back, heheheh.

Note
rhr:70 slept:8.0 weight:61.4kg

woke up shakey & groggy, look at that heart rate, took pup on 2am pee-break, nggnghh, is this how other people feel when they wake up? First cup of (herbal) coffee comforting.

walking 28:00 [1] 1.6 mi (17:30 / mi)

0.4km/0.8km/0.4km, felt great! Focussed on nice loose form w/ good natural movement thru hips, upright posture, and good breath. It was great, suspect good form & good feeling both come from, um, like "unflare" thing, downswing in inflammation. But who cares!? Had small flip-out reading PG's log as I appear to be close to G already. I don' think thats right. Rechecked BMI target, kg/lb conversion. 59 kg will give me BMI of 20.4, appropriate middle ground since I have less muscle mass than average, its all good. O-food is salmon lemon/dill butter sauce, pretty wild/organic brown rice combo, some kinda stri-fry w/ snowpeas & zucchini, raw veg for beauty & some kinda tinkly new-age thing involving either fibre or "living" enzymes, and a really good apple crumble for sheer happiness. Possibly some super-dark chocolate is left too, only cuz I dont much like it.

walking 28:00 [1] 1.2 km (23:20 / km)
rhr:54 slept:7.5 weight:61.6kg

0.4km/0.5km/0.3 km, good rests in between, working well. Some elevation in there too, on leg two, but not a clue how much since no GPS. Mostly to do with walking Gypsy, second leg esp. very interesting, practicing "running" in pack formation in the woods around Byrne Creek to condition her that we are pack leaders - we' d alternate roles being pack-leader and monitoring her loose lead thru the undergrowth and fallen branches- it was so cute to watch this tiny fuzzball puppy galloping after us all on her own. Hope it helps with this breed's evil reputation for (1) willfulness ("No, I'm the leader!")and (2) taking off. Two glasses water, homemade virtuous pizza for dinner - found that extra water makes crust more rollable, thus 2X pizza out of same amt flour. Cool!

walking 22:00 [1] 1.3 km (16:55 / km)
rhr:58 slept:7.0 weight:61.6kg

0.5km/0.4km/0.4km, rests not quite what I like and I could feel like, but OK. Tired. Asian medley, quite O-food-like.

Note

Really did have fun (too much fun) today - my one day of Christmas shopping each year occurred today - went up to Highgate, got the requisite pumpkin spice latte, pulled out The Hobbit (finished the obscure Moonstone and Tale of Two Cities so changed gears for a few days w/ Tolkien before going back to late 1800's authors with 1000+ pp of Sherlock Homes over Xmas) and joyously got into line at the post-office. Next to grocery to buy expensive cheeses and stand in another line, was so thrilled that I gratuitously scampered over to liquor store for dream-quality encounter with most perfect wine-person - I said the word "muscat" and got tour of every muscat ('classic Italian", "lovely spanish a leetle dry", "ooh, now thees ees VEEERY interesting modern Italian effort" and so on) in the store. I can hardly wait for the 26th to try it. ("Classic Italian, a leetle frizzante".... or something...)

Friday Dec 15, 2006 #

walking 30:00 [1] 1.6 km (18:45 / km)
rhr:62 slept:8.0 weight:61.6kg

0.4km/0.8km/0.4km - rests insufficient and I can tell. But what does not kill you, something or other blablabla... I think puppy's "flora" are waging all-out genocidal warfare against my "flora" inside me, kinda uncomfortable feeling. Now I have had time to view the details of her hygienic activities, I feel sorry I ever let her kiss me. Puppy kisses form now on will be less sharing but still meaningful. O-food is beef stew with yummy organic broccoli alongside, and a home-bake ficelle from ecco il pane with that fabulous balsamic vinegar dip from Summerland. 2 glasses water. Stat bikes got partly figured out still dunno how to adjust resistance but realistically that is not much of an issue.

Yellow Dog Yoga 21:00 [1]
rhr:58 slept:5.0 weight:61.6kg

Both Dennis and I appear to have joined the G-for-Gypsy weight-loss program...yoga today much better, did it to non-New Age combo of Na Leo, IZ, Imua, & Keali'i Reichel, very nice tho. Back still twinges a bit. Dealer's choice tofu for dinner tonight, maybe the yummy Malaysian curry w/ coconut milk, & since delivery comes today, any kind of fruit might appear in the fruit salad... How many lifts of a two-pound puppy constitutes a loggable activity?

Note

Ok, thinkee time... not tracking "injuries" cuz mine would seem to skew O-peoples' injuries, since mine tend to correct real fast. More the story that seems to be most useful to me at this point, which I will log. Re canoe getting-out-of movement, Keith says gluteals need to be strengthened - warrior one (he will coach), shalabhasana (keep it IN gluteals & NOT in the spinal erectors, yeah I think I can feel that), and stat-bike (knees in same plane, hi-resistance, lo rpm, hhmm yeah, we'll see if I can do that on the bikes downstairs, ...yeah). Also vastus medialis, again bike action. OK bike visit obviously in order.

Gypsy did 4 yowl sessions none of which we responded to except by being awake, nnggh, sleep dep is not my forte... Today she is happy & FASCINATING. I am groggy, and, I think, dehydrated, which I am working on. Dennis went to a meeting. Gypsy is napping, I am listening to Na Leo and in the most dramatic part of Tale of Two Cities, just before the part that makes me bawl my tear ducts clear. Sunny, windy, maybe when G wakes up I will introduce her to a bit of yoga before going for a "walk" with her (her legs are like about 6 inches long, & attention span two seconds, so we're not goin' far. O-food ? Ha. ummmm, OK, I got walnuts, cream, parmesan, & some spinach-sun-dried tomato whole wheat agnolotti, we're eatin' that & it aint O-food...

Yellow Dog Yoga 20:00 [1]

yoga with amazingly little joy in it until I did my usual Tree of Humbleness (ie the "yes, look I can't do it except sort of half-way" type of vrikshasana) and felt a bit better. Strong tea, turn on Xmas lights, revisit Important Candy Discussion to broaden horizons.

walking 1:00:00 [1] 1.75 km (34:17 / km)
rhr:60 slept:8.0 weight:62.4kg

0.4km/0.7km/0.6km, not quite the right rests in between but OK. Wandering neighborhood, returning faucet, getting pumpkin spice latte, looking at post office line & deciding NOT to mail my freakish globbet of hair to the cancer wig people, picking up contacts (invoked my new tough-girl haircut to ride that nasty glass elevator, oooh, phobias suck! but I survived in a sweaty sense) too tired to face stairs so cunningly walked home the long way thru the sunny woods - grey squirrel, LOTSA knockdowns from yesterdays storm, stream runs high but clear. O-food tonite amounts to vegan effort to use dollops of toban jian to encourage further assault on mounds of organic vegetables in house. Along with tofu, mmmmm. Gypsy arrives in about 5 hours, arrggghhh! 1.5 hours total ice on alternating hips, feels good.

Monday Dec 11, 2006 #

walking 45:00 [1] 2.5 km (18:00 / km)
rhr:58 slept:8.0 weight:62.8kg

0.4km/0.6km/0.6km/0.4km/0.5km w/ +20 minutes rest between. Felt so good! My hair is SHORT! Pumpkin spice latte and a nice seasonal walk up South Granville, best shopping street in ...Canada in my opinion, chocolate, shoes, pies, luxurious unguents, art, Italian clothes, fine cured hams, porcelain, shabu-shabu, the Old Stanley, cafes & coffeehouses, linen, posh groceries, posh housewares...then bank for puppy ransom, & coffee w/Steve downtown while inspecting gingerbread houses at the Hyatt. Huge storm in progress the whole time, wind, rain, the works. Oddly sour coq-au-vin will attempt to transformerize into more acceptable chicken cacciatore tonight. No hydration to speak of. Interesting ideas re butt exercise, gotta think a bit on it - stationary bike?

Sunday Dec 10, 2006 #

Note
rhr:60 slept:98.5 weight:63kg (rest day)

nnnghhnngh...ice cream for breakfast to compensate for what is either flare or forgotten meds last night. oooh, no experiments/swimming today. Ice everywhere. Drink water. Coq au vin in crockpot for dinner, along with some sort of assault on heap of organic vegetables.
Ice felt great, nothing nicer than half a day in bed covered w/ icepaks, mmmm... and by late afternoon flare subsides enuf (I notice flares now very rarely go over 2 days vs. 5-6 days previous to 2+ years ago, managing things better?) so I do a very slow version of the House-Gerbil-Dance - repopulated hall with all its junk now floor is cured, did up puppy's domain completely, & made up two frozen dinners (chili & spaghetti sauce) for our island retreat christmas in 2 weeks... 4 glasses water, how do people DO this hydration thing??! Was washing my hair for last time in prep for cancer-wig hair donation thing tomorrow when I realized I wasnt washing MY hair anymore, I was really washing someone else's hair. Cool. (MY hair is gonna be REALLY short)

Yellow Dog Yoga 20:00 [1]

hip is tiny bit cranky from last two days but I am encouraged - giving it ice AM & PM, & will be restful - range of motion, a little strength stuff for bits that need it, pranayama with good ocean visualization - the breaks in my focus remind me of the humbleness of the god-square in traditional quilting where the "perfect" pattern is broken by the quilter by adding a single mismatched piece. Also did 45 minutes of vigorous whole body workout sealing floor, what fun to feel my various muscles - I hope they are not annoyed tomorrow. I'm sure it is intensity two cuz I almost started to sweat! But I'm not logging it. Maybe swimming tomorrow? O-food will be Terrifylingly Experimental cilantro-pumpkinseed pesto paired in a non-sequitur with white-trash greens. And mandarins for dessert. Vegan organic gentleness on the earth. Or perhaps pizza if experiment crashes. 1 glass water so far.

walking 25:00 [1] 1.6 km (15:37 / km)
slept:7.0 weight:63kg

First leg of a good test day - will have completed 4X 0.8km with appropriate rests, AND after yesterday's exertions - I feel/hope that this is gonna work ie not result in hip freaking out. Poor sleep, thinking about Gypsy and O-meets for next year (Goldrush/Sagestomp, WA thing, lil stuff locally & on Island, but then big Q is Saskatoon map w/ no contours/big square mileses of canola/wheat/alfalfa/canola/etc or Elbert CO gotta be more entertaining - oddly both Yahoo and MSN say they are about same driving time away, hmmmm.) BUT anyway, got up slow, made friends w/ Mr. Tylenol in prep for walk and focussed on good form the whole way thru, up/down, stairs, flat, slopes...keep the joint surfaces shaped for normal stride not limping stride. Hard going out, happy coming home.

walking 20:00 [1] 1.4 km (14:17 / km)

Second set. Felt excellent going out, but kinda (inconsequentially) sore by halfway mark. Proper rest between 0.7km & 0.7km. Casino Royale was good as was Japanese food. Puppy might be coming early! Gotta get the rest of the tile sealed to minimize Puppy Pee Permeability factor (PPP factor). Two glasses water.

Thursday Dec 7, 2006 #

walking 30:00 [1] 2.2 km (13:38 / km)
rhr:56 slept:8.0 weight:63.6kg

ngghhgnhh....this has been an annoying day. Up to Edmonds for new faucet & visit to creepy petstore - walked back even tho everything hurt - why? I so wanna be outside, I guess. We will see if it was a mistake. Snow is almost gone, heard a towhee, saw yellow-crested sparrow trio. Did not get floor cleaned, grocery bins were piled up outside so I dragged them in, unloaded them and it has become clear that like Imelda with her shoes, I got a problem with organic vegetables, I am now storing heaps of them on the patio. Get eating Dennis, I'm sure you will orienteer better with more fibre in you. But now I have some tea and am gonna listen to Jurgen and Disc Drive. Installed faucet (really wrongly, turns out, dang) while waiting for tea, doesnt look great but works good (not). 2 glasses water.

Wednesday Dec 6, 2006 #

Note
rhr:56 slept:7.5 weight:63.4kg (rest day)

no "training", lotsa floor-washing. An african peanut soup with lamb & chicken for dinner, based partly on dad-in-law's & my lunches. Salad of blanched green beans, tomato, & parched corn w/ an oregano vinaigrette, & a baked hubbard squash. With a festive side of Brandy Beans. 1.5 glasses of water.

Tuesday Dec 5, 2006 #

swimming 20:00 [1]
rhr:56 slept:7.5 weight:63.4kg

swimming for 20 minutes today, somewhat longer than when pool was at 78 degrees - now it is at 80 degrees and I apparently can stay in a little longer before I get chilled. I still stand on my tippy-toes and sing the sad Arctic beluga song. So tiresome not having any significant mammalian muscle mass.

YDY 12:00 [1]

did range of motion before and after swimming. I like the yoga-based stepwise spinal twists. I think pinkie is rebounding satisfactorily. On the other hand, right hip is twinging enuf that I think I will ice it as I drink my second cup of coffee and read about puppy training. 10 days til Gypsy arrives. O-food will be classic miso soup although I don't adore this amano miso, I like the white better - then kamut spagetti pretending to be Hokkien noodles (a more vivid fantasy life I've never encountered) with organic chard, tofu, scallops, & onion mingled with charming seasonal red bits of lush spiciness from the toban jian jar. And mango/kiwi salad, assorted raw & virtuous veg .

walking 12:00 [1] 0.8 km (15:00 / km)

one repetition only today, around block for 0.8 km. two glasses water though...

Monday Dec 4, 2006 #

Note
rhr:58 slept:10.0 weight:63.4kg

I guess I needed my sleep. Pinky is feeling faintly tingly/numb, time to get back on the exercises for that. I guess I slacked off a bit in the absence of negative stimuli. Check back in log for last bad time? Green-tea-infused chicken for dinner. A little walking, a little yoga maybe. Swimming in the arctic-temp pool tomorrow to have less pressure on hip? But more torque-y type stuff, so I dunno, time for experiments.

walking 25:00 [1] 1.5 km (16:40 / km)

3X 0.5 km, minimum rest between was about 10 minutes. Both hips dully achey, ie not warning me, but really tired & heavy feeling. Very brief yoga in the evening - mountain with pranayama & golden visualization. Not very strong.

Sunday Dec 3, 2006 #

Note
rhr:60 slept:6.0 weight:63.4kg

well, somebody was excited about their puppy and didnt sleep very much. Marching around huge amounts in huge packed box-stores buying leashes, collar, toys, etc - dunno how far so I can't log it. No bad effect on hip!? still feel twinges but not the shivery thing that seems precursor to badness. Good log! Tea with Sarah (excellent almond cranberry cake, my own invention, will add a touch of salt next time). Dinner at Mr. Ho's with Alfie back form Asia, D got a Breitling knockoff, I got a gold silk scarf from Thailand. He had such a good time!

Saturday Dec 2, 2006 #

Note
rhr:60 slept:8.5 weight:63.4kg

Interestingly, hip WAS sore today. So, was it the yoga or the pseudo-cardio wiggle on Th that did it. Time for experiments. Didn't walk about just rode back and forth in Jeep to Abbotsford to choose OUR PUPPY GYPSY, who we will pick up in less than two weeks! Hip calmed down miraculously in evening as I watched D make the fruit salad. Non-O-food tamales for dinner. Xmas lights up.

downtown for transfusion at Saint Paul's - in aid of this did 0.5km/0.6km/0/5km, could feel right hip doing its whingey, twitchy thing so did not do the (optional) one km downtown. comforting cheap japanese food afterwards. Jeweler says he can't repair the silver cups, but...Acme can.
